I am interested in producing a chosen card from a block of ice. I would like the ice to be the size of a packet of bicycle cards with the chosen card in the middle. The Ice will be produced from the card box. My question is does anybody have a method of freezing the card into the ice and getting the right size of ice that fits into the card box? I hope this makes sense and would appreciate any advice? Many Thanks

Off the top of my head I think you would have to find a plastic card case. Easily found. Fill it 1/2 way with water and freeze then place the duplicate card in and fill the top 1/2 and freeze again. You then would have to let it melt for a while until it can fit into a regular case. Also you may need to "adhere" the card to the bottom slab of ice before adding water to prevent it from floating to the top.

Well, for starters, you would have to sacrifice a card box. I'd wrap it up in cling wrap and then fill half of it with water. Seal the opening and lay it down in your freezer. Once frozen tear it out and take the half block of ice and slide it into a new card box. Wrap up the box leaving the flap open. Insert a card and fill the box the rest of the way with ice. Seal it all up and lay it flat back in the freezer.
The reason I would do it in two phases is so the card will definately be in the middle of the block of ice. You could also use a plastic box about the size of a deck and freeze the card in the water, then melt the ice down a little so it fits in your card box. The trick will be keeping this thing from melting in your pocket while waiting to get to the trick! Another idea is that you could fill a card box with some of that clear resin they sell at hobby shops with the card floating in it. You could rough the edges a bit to make it look like a block of ice. Then mabye just wet it with water and freeze it to make it a little cold and drippy. Then you could just show it in the block of ice without breaking it out. Anyway, there's some ideas. |

I've not tried it, but here's a few thoughts:
1. I imagine the best way of freezing a card into a block of ice is to freeze two blocks separately, then place the card on the lower block, pour some water over it, then place the other block on top and shove it back into the freezer. [Edit - since writing this I see that this is similar to the above posts!] 2. To get the right size of ice block you could, I suppose, find a small plastic food container (which would probably be too big) and cut it to size. The "cutting" is probably a little involved since you'd have to: a. Trim it to half the height of the card box (if you follow my thoughts outlined in 1) b. Cut the container such that you can glue it together again, being a size (length and width-wise) similar to a card box. Because the container is plastic, it would be (hopefully) re-usable. Like I say, I've not tried it, but it sounds plausible. A thought that has crossed my mind a few times is getting a signed card into a block of ice! I've got an idea but need to play around with it a bit. Cheers, Beetroot |

Mike,
Try this. Take an empty card box and cut of the top flap and those little flaps on the sides. Tape a junk card using double sided tape to each side on the inside of the box. Now stand the box straight up in your freezer and put about a half inch of water on the inside. Now place the chosen card in the box, and into the half inch of water. Place the card so that it is in the middle of the box, (it is helpful to put some tape on the top of the box, like a makeshift flap, to hold the card in its centered position). Once the half inch of water is starting to freeze to the point where it can hold the card in position, take the tape off of the top and fill the rest of the box with water. If you wait until it is completely frozen, there will be "lines" and it won't look to good when the whole block is done. Once this freezes, you have to peel away the junk box and the two junk cards from either side. You may have to sand off a little bit of the top, but since you used those two junk cards, the block of ice with the chosen card inside will now easily fit into another box that you would use for a performance. I hope that was clear enough, and hope it helped. Craig

I actually have done the SIGNED card in a similiar sized block. It worked but is not practical. By that I do not mean the method I used, but as stated earlier having to carry the ice was a pain.

I would make a cast positive in plaster then make a mold from Latex. To get the card in the middle fill the mold partially, freeze, add card, add water refreeze. This method could be used many times, and many molds can be made from the plaster positive without buying a whole bunch of cards just for their boxes
You might look into Mold Builder Latex which comes cheaply ($10 or so) in a smallish container. And a suitable Art plaster which is also pretty cheap. Keep in mind that oils are corrosive to latex. If you want the Plaster positive to slip out of the mold easy... I know it sounds funny, but smear a thin layer of butter on the plaster positive as a release agent. There are better ways if you are doing something requiring exact science but this isn't really a big project. You could also use resin instead of real ice... just a thought.

Put a small plastic bag inside a card box, stand it upright, fill it with water, put the card it, freeze it.

Folks, you might want to try carrying around some ice for a whie before spending time on this sort of effect. At some point we all try, and some of us even go so far as to establish working relationships with the local diner and dry ice factories...
though till you've personally carried ice around a few times this kind of trick is really more wishful thinking than workable magic. For most practical applications, you would be about as well served using the intersessor and making a card-in-lucite type gimick. Again, caryying around ice is not so easy. It's like producing a snowball in the summertime... fun though a real challenge to do effectively. And don't forget to anticipate a repeat performance. * please use some caution when carrying dry ice *

If you think carrying ice around is difficult now, consider that Max Malini produced large blocks of ice in the days before refrigeration was commonly available. Can you imagine how magical that must have seemed to folks then?

Could this thread be prompted by a UK TV special on over Christmas?
Maybe the question you shoul dbe asking if that is true....is how did he use the intersessor on a "thought of" card? |

Simplest way to get the necessary mold is go to a shop that has baseball trading cards. They have the perfect plastic card box for about a dollar. Fill half way and freeze. Put in card and then pour in water to fill and freeze. I've only done the trick once when going to a friend's house where I snuck it into their freezer. Left it there until shortly before performing. Performed for a party of about thirty people. It killed. I've never done it again and may never have to. Word of mouth is powerful!

If you don't want to go through the "fill halfway and freeze" tedium, just chip an ice cube into a few small pieces and balance the card on those when you fill the card case with water. That should put the card halfway into the ice block.
If you get through the entire evening without an opportunity to do the trick, just step away to the men's room and then return with your jacket open and a dejected expression. This will do nothing for your image or self-respect but it will at least explain the rapidly expanding dampness in your pants. |

Hi Jonathan!
You're right! You could produce the ice via my routine, and then have the card appear inside. Good idea! Later, Kranzo

Useful tip to you all!!
If you want your ice to look pretty and be perfectly see through then boil the water for a while first, this gets rid of most of the oxygen (which is what usually makes ice cubes cloudy). You can let it cool downb before you pour it into your mold and it will still work.. If you are worried about carrying the ice, then just use a good small cool bag, and put a few blocks of ice in there too (or thouse re-coolable blocks you get for picnics), and bring about 10 set ups with you... Obviously not a completely impromptu trick... |

The problem with the 'two blocks' method is that the you end up with a crack in the block exactly where the card is. Its a minor point but to a layer person its the same as finding a welded junction on a set of linking rings.
The BEST way to my mind is to tie a piece of clear (not black) invisible thread that is half the length of the final block to the card and then to the bottom of mould. The card can floats in the water exactly half way from the top. No spec will EVER find the thread in all that ice and water! |
