Sadly, that's about where my programming skills languished, along with some proficiency in PASCAL. I never was able to teach myself all the object-oriented stuff and whatever folks do now. My teachers thought I was Italian, I was so good at making spaghetti code.

And for about 35 of those 50 years, I've had the useless acronym Beginner's All-purpose Symbolic Instruction Code wasting space in my brain. Never even won a beer with that bit of knowledge.

Many years ago I had a cubible right next to a systems analyst. I was doing architecture, but that's where a free cubicle was found for me. Anyway, she was incredibly smart and very attractive, and we got along fine. Then I began to notice how she typed and such, and noticed a pattern. So one day I decided to play a joke on her.
I came in early and asked another analyst for the system password. We were on mainframes mostly, but she had a 486 that had some stuff on its own, including BASIC. I sat down and wrote a short program in BASIC and left it running. She came in and saw the C/:> prompt. Nothing strange there, as another analyst could have used the machine. She wrote down the system password. The computer came back with Excuse me? There was a moment of hesitation, and then she typed it again. The computer came back with Are you sure you want to go there? She turned to the other analyst and said someone had gotten into the system. "I sear to God, come here, look at this." By the time she turned back to the screen, it was blank. A moment later the screen typed out Don't look at me like that, lady. I'm just a dumb machine. She turned to her friend for a moment, and the screen was blank when she turned back. By this time I was in hysterics, and her friend, who was in on it, could only laugh. That's when I told her she was inside a BASIC program on her computer, and she did a LIST and saw it. Ah, the good old days. Try something like that now and you'll probably get fired.

I think you missed a couple of semi-colons.
As it reads, your program would run THE BASIC PROGRAMMING LANGUAGE IS NOW 50 YEARS OLD! Whereas if you put a semicolon after the W" and another after the PRINT N, I think it would print the entire thing on one line. My great achievement in BASIC was to develop a database. You would put the Powerball numbers into it each week and when you ran it, it would tell you how frequently each number came up.

I once contributed an ELIZA program written in BASIC to a now defunct computer magazine.
Really? Tell me more.
