Can anyone tell my why I need Adobe Flash installed on my Windows PCs?
I'm bugged at least weekly by popups for Flash Player updates and I don't know why I need it. I have just been sent an email alert by Zander Insurance, who I have an ID theft policy with that disabling Adobe Flash player can stop hackers in their tracks. This alert came in wake of the recent AOL hackers and users were told to change their passwords immediately. So, any recommendations on disabling Adobe Flash Player and/or the consequences thereof?

A lot of web sites require Adobe Flash Player to be enabled for you to use them. YouTube is an example. You could disable it and then if you couldn't access a favorite site of yours, you could easily reinstall it.
A personal example of mine is that I use a webcam to be able to view inside my home when I am away for extended periods. The software provided is configured so that I couldn't do that without Adobe Flash Player.

If you do decide to install or upgrade, never do so from a link in an email... just for safety sake. Go directly to the company website (read the URL carefully, as there are look-alikes), and any available downloads or upgrades will be found there.

@ slowkneenuh: so it looks like I need to keep Flash Player enabled because I use Youtube a lot
@ Michael: The popups I usually get are from Adobe, but perhaps I'll be more careful in the future in checking the updates. @ Danny: Zander does everything for me that LifeLock does, so far as I can see. No one can prevent ID theft, but the recovery is where the real work comes in, and they both seem to do the same as far as that's concerned, unless I'm missing something. I'm also covered up to a million dollars in any subsequent losses. @ Magnus: Thanks folks!
