Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a law banning all swearing in films, television broadcasts, theatres and the media. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-27286742
Good? Bad? I will go for .... Hmmm .... Good!

I don't particularly like over-reliance on swearing for effect. But Putin is dead wrong - you can't ban something just because you don't like it. I am with Mary.

I see. Well I agree with that. Though I am sure who is in a moral position to make any moral dictates.
I think he did it to stop many USA films being shown there bye the way.

For the same reason the Magic Café ban it.
No not at all. I think there is not enough censorship which includes swearing and so on. Entertainment, especially TV and film, lead the way in how people behalf - monkey see monkey do - and it ought set a decent example. He has not banned but he is going fine them for it and so it is like swear box. I ban swearing in my common gaming house. In poker games, we can't be having bad language in front of young ladies who often croup. It is the same in a casino in the comps, you get time out. I have give much thought really, as I have just read it, but it good to me at first glace.

So, wait, Putin is doing to movies what the FCC does to much of U.S. broadcast television when it comes to swearing?
If you disapprove of Putin's actions, do you also disapprove of the FCC's censorship? (FWIW, Canadian broadcast television appears to be far more liberal when it comes to sex and swearing.)

Most of the time when it appears it is just due to lazy writing. Better writers can tell the story at least as well without relying on naughty words. I mean, come on, if someone can write an entire novel without using the letter "e" then a competent writer should be able to do a movie script without using the "f" word. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gadsby_%28novel%29 But I would hope that the Russians would still allow swearing in works of art in which it is truly essential. Or allow some use of it in any movie, so long as it is not over the top.

The old gangster films had no swearing in them and they were good, if not better than today's, in terms of realism. I don't see any or much need for it.

In terms of realism the old gangster films were better because they had no swearing?
Really? The old gangsters didn't swear? That would have been news to Al Capone. Did you ever read Good Fellas?" It's a TRUE story and much of the dialogue comes directly from interviews and court transcripts. |

"The cheaper the crook, the gaudier the patter.” The old school had more class and dressed better.
The gangsters back then copied what they saw at the movies and now. We would have a much better class of criminal, if it wasn't for all these cheap punks coming out of Hollywood today.

If you are correct, films like that will die in the box office and you will be vindicated. Except that doesn't happen. Films with a "G" rating (unless they're specifically directed at children) are poison at the box office to the point where the producers of "Popeye" felt they had to have a five minute sequence where "Poopdeck Pappy" stomps around the deck yelling at everyone to "haul ***" and when their ship crashed into Bluto's, Popeye flies over the railing with a clearly audible "$***!" You are certainly entitled to your opinion. It's when you think that "your" opinion should be law of the land that I get concerned. You would be a scary person with a Death Note. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0758742/?ref_=tt_rec_tt (This is actually the 2006 live action movie although the cover shows a character from the anime.)

So you and the wife, lets say for example, love TV and films with loads profanity in them. And Monkey see monkey do, you both start using profanity high wide and handsome. Including around your little girl who my little girl is playing with because they are pals. You are entitled to your opinion.

My wife and I saw "The wolf of wall street." It set a record for more F words than any other film to date. I truthfully don't care if someone swears if the time and place are OK. But she and I both felt assaulted by the constant flow of curses coming off the screen. I have always said there there was one move that had the F word in it that I thought was both perfect and necessary, it was the first terminator movie back from the mid 80's. After an hour and a half of watching this spoiled silver spoon valley girl thrust into a situation she could not handle nor even understand... She gets Arnold in a giant machine press and throws the switch destroying him. Her line sounds like "You're terminated sucker!" The reason it belonged there was that unlike most films that as previously mentioned throw in some profanity to boost the rating, this was Linda Hamilton's character becoming who she would be. For her it was huge growth, and had she said "Go to hell!" or something like that, it would nto have had the impact the line needed.
Most movie swearing I could do with out.

My only point was that old gangster movies, in which the gangsters didn't swear at all. were NOT more realistic as tommy suggested. The Motion Picture Code simply did not allow certain language, whether or not it was realistic.
