I heard Danzig is doing an Elvis tribute album. So that's... a thing...

My twin sister and I just watched ELVIS with Austin Butler. Hadn't seen it until now and I wanted to see it before the Oscars arrive. And so, watching that inspired me to listen to Elvis singing Unchained Melody (once again). I take some exception to the lyric time goes by so slowly. Because time seems to be going so quickly. I understand the lyric and have felt that way in the past, but now I more generally feel time goes by so quickly. And maybe Elvis did too, for example, his reference to the age of 40. Just for the sake of accuracy, the poster admits in the comments that he missed a version, so not all known live versions are in fact compiled here:
Your thoughts are welcome. |

I listened to the first four versions. I didn't think it was flattering to him. He seemed all over the place, not in full control of his voice.
There are many who have covered the song, some very well, but for this song, Bobby Hatfield owns it.

Thank you for listening to that many, at least, Jack. I agree the early versions are very rough and I would suggest they were examples of Elvis loving (note he referred to it multiple times as one of his favorite songs- this coming from a man who recorded hundreds) a song and wanting to share before he had really decided what he wanted to do with it, before it was "ready". Something, though not generally recommended, I think most performers can understand. Consider, perhaps, he may have felt he was running out of time to do so.
For those who have the patience to listen through- and I didn't really expect there would be anyone here who would- I feel there is an informative journey of Elvis' development of his version of the song, a lovely insight into his interpretation and musical choices and into his humanity, too. Which is something I generally like to study, anyway, so I see it as a gift, but that's me. I don't think it's only me, though. I think Elvis' willingness to share his humanity and vulnerability is a huge, if not the main, reason so many people love him. Audiences love to be given insight, to be allowed to relate on a real and genuine human level. And Elvis allowed that. I know you're partial to Bobby Hatfield. I have a great appreciation for that version, as well. I think Elvis made the song sound completely different. Not better, completely different. In my opinion, it's like a different song- apples and oranges. Bobby and Elvis. There's room and then some for both of them. Thanks very much for taking the time and sharing your thoughts, Jack. I appreciate it. |

Apologies for triple posting- since we're discussing Unchained Melody versions and it's Elvis' Birthday, too, I thought I'd put this next one here. It would be nice to see the military doing more of this instead of what they're more generally known for. Touches on "If I Can Dream", I'd say.

Enjoyed the Military version, it must have been very stirring in person.
I was ten years old when the movie Love Me Tender came out. Have been an Elvis fan ever since. Collected the trading cards at that time. What I’ve always liked about Elvis is that he gave you everything, didn’t hold anything back. |

Thank you very much for posting, Nicholas. Where did your trading cards go? I collected a few of the ones that came out maybe in the 1990s, I don't recall exactly, but that seems about right. Couldn't collect 'em all, because they stopped selling them in my area before I was able. Could buy the whole collection now, but that's not much fun.

Had the trading cards sixty five years ago. Long gone. Who knew that a mint set would go for a couple of thousand dollars today.
Around thirty five years ago, I was performing magic at a night spot for some friends of my parents. One of the friends was an assistant to Raymond , a Baltimore magician. Her daughter told me that she dated Elvis. Later, in a shopping center, some Elvis memorabilia was being sold and sure enough, there was a picture of her arm in arm with Elvis. Thought that was pretty cool. |

I had the little bubblegum records. Not sure if anyone remembers those.

Thank you very much for sharing, critter.
I listened to a few of Danzig's takes. Kinda brilliant he put Pocket Full of Rainbows on there! Whenever I used to play that (from the Elvis mixed cassettes I recorded from The Elvis Hour every Sunday night at 8pm!) , Mom would let me know she detested that song. "Oh, I can't stand that song..." or something to that effect. Here's Danzig's take on Young and Beautiful, since the video I posted with an in concert version from E was removed. I'm not sure if we had the bubble gum records here. |

This is the record packages. They look like little record sleeves and inside is a piece of gum shaped like a record. I never chewed the gum.
