I like how on the website it says you can send them an e-mail to "check on your order status". At this point, this book might set some kind of record for being the longest waiting period from a pre-ordered item. In 2015 (which is almost here), we'll be knocking on a DECADE since he first started taking money for it.

I've totally lost trust in this man (yes I love his past publications and I have nearly all of them!) and will not purchase anything from him until the book reaches my door. He has time to do up new DVDs and other products to sell but no time for a book that all of us had paid him almost a decade ago. Lucky I am not 90 yrs old else I might not live to see the book !

I wrote this topic back on May 11th, 2014. 186 days have passed without a new message or email from Todd Karr.
So where is the book? |

Easy to answer, checking my mails.
Here: "Martin Gardner's Impromptu is finally arriving later in 2010"! No... wait. "Martin Gardner's Impromptu is finally around the corner. I'm laying it out right now, and it's looking beautiful." No, sorry - that's old news from 2012. Ah, here: "Layout's preceding [sic] nicely on Martin Gardner's Impromptu, so it won't be long." Wait a second. That was in April 2013. Personally, I've written off the purchase price and am leaning back. If a nice surprise eventually arrives at my door, all the better. But I wouldn't bet $125 on it again. |

He's citing the mangled version by a famous president, where the speaker dodges any responsibility for being fooled multiple times.

Got this email from Todd Karr last week, when I asked when it should be ready:
"In the next few months hopefully." |

Last year at this time I asked for a refund (and finally got it) and he told me it should be out shortly after Christmas.

I'm sure it will be out shortly after Christmas. Just not so certain of which year.

Agathon - How long were you waiting? I know people who have since 2006
theghostcompany - When do you predict the book will be out? ToddKarr - How much longer do we have to wait? |

This will arrive at the same time as the last issue of Antinomy.

Presumably having spent the $40,000+ in preorder money long ago, I can't see how he would be able to raise the money to get the book physically printed.
Given that material hurdle, I don't expect this book to ever see print. And without the preorder money available, he presumably couldn't afford to announce the project as canceled. Refunding all that money would cost more than actually printing the books. I expect him to quietly wait it out and string people along til the buyers forget and/or die off (possibly a viable strategy, given magician demographics), paying off the odd refund demand here and there. In the event of mass refund demands leading to legal action, he may(*) already be shielded by the statute of limitations. (*) Duration varies by state. |

On Dec 17, 2014, Tim Cavendish wrote: Tim, I totally agree with everything you said. The book will probably never be released. However, he does still accepts pre-orders. I wonder how many magicians that pre-ordered the book have died. What happens then? Since 2006, some magicians may have forgot they even purchased the book (not likely though). I also wonder how many magicians have moved since 2006. Has Todd been keeping a spreadsheet on new addresses? It will be funny to see what types of emails we get regarding the book in 2015. What I'd like to see Todd do is simply refund all pre-orders. Every dollar to everyone. No emailing in asking for the money, no "hey, you want some PDFs? Pick any 3".
Just refund every dollar. Publish the book. And then -- to the folks that pre-ordered -- give them a 10% off code for the published book. I'm not sure why this wasn't done in the first place. There's no need to collect money for a book that's been promised for -- what? -- 8, 9 years? Just refund the money, print the book, and then give folks that actually did preorder 10% off the price. |
