I'm just a hobbyist who recently got into mentalism.
I don't do "card tricks" but I do a couple mental effects that use cards. I personally prefer blue rider back bicycle cards, but after watching some DVD's I have noticed that some pros use red-backed Bikes. So I'm curious to hear from the pros and other hobbyists here ... do prefer blue-backed or re-backed cards ... and if you have a preference, why? |

It's not an either/or proposition. I sometimes use cheap bridge decks with puppy dogs on the backs. (Really- who would ever suspect those, or a deck with the Coca Cola logo on the back for that matter?)

I have bicycle with blank backs and a red fournier deck. To be honest. I want to drag the attention from the cards and present them as only a tool for what we soon will achieve. I don't want to spark magician thoughts in the mind of the participant.
Effect: The mentalist memorize any kind of information in less than a second. $5 |

I don't think this is meant to hide the method/look ordinary or anything like that.
I think he's asking about a aesthetic preferences, I personally prefer using blue backed rider cards also, couse I find them the most relaxing looking and great for readings.

For magic tricks, I think the utilization of cards is okay. For mental effects, however, I think too many better ways to portray the power of the mind than through the use of cards (which may scream card trick) to laymen.

Often if you put too much attention on the cards they'll look like a trick deck in lay mens eyes.
Same for everything. If you think about doing a move it will shine through. I usually pretend that I am sloppy with cards to rule out the magician thought. It doesn't matter what cards you use, it only matters how you present them. Effect: The mentalist memorize any kind of information in less than a second. $5 |

Well said Mr. Cassidy I am just starting to use your card memory routine that you did on the penguin lecture, pure genius even my wife and two sons, who all do a little bit to varying degrees were floored by it. I use cheap decks that I buy for next to nothing so I can just leave them on the floor, I must thank you for sharing this, it now closes my parlour show and is the one thing they all ask me about after the show, how long did it take you to train your memory etc. Pure genius, thanks again.

Frankly, I have never understood why performers feel the need of saying, "this is an ordinary deck of fifty-two playing cards" instead of; "We will use a deck of cards for this".

By the way, to answer the original post I use red, especially if you need a card signed, its more visible.

I was just curious as to whether there is a good reason to use red-backed cards vs. blue-backed cards and you just gave me one. Thanks for the reply. |

I use both red and blue. I generally have a red backed code deck and a blue backed deck in BCS stack. I don't think I've had a single card signed since I switched from magic to mentalism.

Red and Blue are both fine..
It's just individual taste. It's easier to see writings on reds though, as already mentioned. Effect: The mentalist memorize any kind of information in less than a second. $5 |

If you can get a deck from the venue you are performing at ahead of time, even if you don't KNOW for sure you will be performing, so much the better. Many hotels have their own advertising decks available at the front desk, and of course there are the casinos.....ahhhhhh, the casinos.... Bryn

I often use casino cards. Used casino decks are available in many stores and are cheap. There are also plenty of Indian casinos where you can get decks.
Drug store house brands are also quite good- I especially like the ones from CVS. |

I am quite a fan of plastic cards mainly because I tend to get these black dots on regular playing cards. I don't know why the appear, haven't really investigated it. Must be ... I don't know... Fat? Filth?
When I buy a deck of cards I always tell myself, I will keep these in the package and they will always look top notch. One week later the package is destroyed and ten cards have disappeared. That is real magic! Effect: The mentalist memorize any kind of information in less than a second. $5 |

If I have to use them my favorite are the purplish backed bicycle 125 anniversary. Cheap and classic.
