I received one of the last of the available Joe Porper cups and balls sets in brass from Hocus Pocus Magic this afternoon.
This is a really nice set of cups -- a bit larger than the Sherwoods, nicely balanced. They come with four red crocheted balls and a very well made takedown wand in cocobolo, brass and ebony. The whole outfit packs into a fitted wooden case made of alder. They are not cheap -- $695 for the set. The folks at Hocus Pocus told me the set would take a baseball. Not quite. You can roll the baseball into the cup, but it won't sit flat on the table. A cricket ball is more like it. They are CNC machined, not spun, and the finish is beautiful. The only fly in the ointment is in the case. The hinges are far too weak for a heavy wooden case like this, so by the time the set reached me, the hinges were sprung enough that the top of the box did not align properly. This can be corrected easily with a little bit of work with a screwdriver and a pair of pliers. I'll give these 4 1/2 stars out of 5, just because of the sprung hinges on the case.

I own the copper version of Joe Porper's cups, having bought the set from Bob Kohler the first day(minutes) they went on sale. Heavy cups, but beautiful. The inside is black for great contrast. I don't know what Joe used, but the coating may have been baked into the inside of the cups for durabilty. I had no problems with my box..also heavy solid wood construction with decorative inlayed pips on top. Our Steve Brooks has reviewed the Porper Cups elsewhere in the forum.

Talk about a follow-up! Paul Gross of Hocus Pocus called me directly to offer to replace the case for me. That really says something!

Paul's one of the good guys. I've heard nothing but positive things about him.
I've also got a set of the Porper cups. I've been very pleased with them. |

Here is a follow-up to the original post about the Porper Cups and Balls set. When the fellows at Hocus Pocus Magic heard that I'd had a problem with the hinges on the box that the cups fit in, they called Joe Porper. Joe offered to replace the box with a new one.
So I sent the box to Joe, just before I left for a road trip to Nashville. When I returned, here was a new box with perfect hinges. Joe is a really nice guy who is very concerned with his products. He treats people the way he wants to be treated. So, I give the cups 5 Stars out of 5. I also give 5 Stars out of 5 to Hocus Pocus for their service.
