Hello, I love packet tricks I am wondering on what all you great magicians on this site think of them & which ones you guys prefer. There are so many great ones, the ones I am more interested in are ones with gaff cards...

Is Twisted Sister even gaffed? It is good. I used to love Ronnay's Sympathetic Cards as a teenager, though it isn't gaffed.
KokoB, why do they have to be gaffed? Some of the best are gaffed, others are blissfully examinable. Wild Card, NFW, and Skinner's Monte are all good gaffed packet tricks. Gaetan Bloom's Visible Monte looked great, too, though I haven't seen that gaff produced in a long time.
The secret of deception is in making the truth seem ridiculous.

Shenanigans by Aldo Columbini. I find it to be pure eye candy for the spectator. No need for the spectator to pick a card nor to have to remember a number.

I don't know where the line is drawn between a packet and a part-deck, but these days it has to be Red See Passover. I also like Double Back.

Stand up is great but you must put in the practice. Three is the one that your not allowed to do on Social Media or tv right? Now sure, twisted sister isn't really gaffed but its still a stellar effect.

- Thought Reversal (Marlo)
- Color Monte (Temple) - Sympathetic Cards (Ronnay) [another vote] - THREE (Valentine) [another vote] - Twisted Sister (Bannon) [another vote] Why gaffed or prepared? Andrew |

However, Bannon's similar trick called Duplicity can be examined as it uses no gaffs. My fave gaffed packet at the moment is Gary Jones' Shock Twist. |

Thanks everyone, The reason I like gaffs at the right moment & performed right gaffs can hit hard to the audience, I like non gaff packet tricks but with a gaff its almost like real magic at times. Videoman Shock Twist looks great!

As you mentioned the gaff/non gaff subject, I think that 'poor mans monte' is an outstanding packet trick. One of my favourite routines if it's kind. No gaff cards, but there is a dupe. A real stunner. It's on Aldo's 'a few good cards' I think.

On May 20, 2014, orchid666 wrote: Great call. This Richard Vollmer effect was first published in Apocalypse. It is a mainstay of my working repertoire and yes, it is a stunner. To KokoB, I am curious as are a few others about the gaff focus. I preface the following by stating that I have no problems at all with effects that employ gaffs. But what I found curious is the assertion that "performed right gaffs can hit hard to the audience, I like non gaff packet tricks but with a gaff its almost like real magic at times." There are two ways of approaching this. Almost three years ago I wrote a review of Dan Harlan's "A Little R&B" and I mentioned that the effects therein when performed well are profoundly powerful. Truth be told, this was one of those resources from which I couldn't choose an effect I wouldn't want to perform. And yes, quite a few of the routines do "feel" like real magic. I know that you stated that you like non-gaff effects as well but I think the questions posed by some others and I really have to do with privileging of method and and the fact that performance seems to contribute little and that's where I get a bit hazy. I could make an equally compelling argument that any magic effect performed well will hit hard regardless of method. Lately I've been exploring more Roy Walton material and stumbled upon a little gem titled Ambitious A,2,3,4. My curiosity was piqued because one of my favorite packet effects I perform is Larry Jennings' Ambitious Classic. I wanted to play with the Walton effect as the two are related. Like most of Roy Walton's magic, the method is beautiful and the climax hits hard and it hits hard when it's "performed right." But back to gaffs. I guess I would like a bit of clarification. Perhaps I'm reading or rather creating a subtext in your statement that you didn't intend. It seems to me you are stating that gaffed effects are or can be inherently stronger. I'm not sure if that is something that could be easily proved. Is there a means by which criteria can be established that could prove that the "Skinner" monte is stronger than a sleight of hand monte - and that includes Poor Man's Monte which does require sleight of hand? Maybe this is a discussion for a new thread. Anyhow, some of my favorite gaffed and non-gaffed packet effects include: Gaffed: Red See Passover, Twisted Sisters, B'Wave, MacDonald's Aces, Hyper Wave, Presto Printo (examinable) Non-gaffed: Poor Man's Monte, Ambitious Classic, Ambitious A,2,3,4, DDLT (and Cameron Francis' latest variant), Duplicity Lastly, I wanted to bring up a correction. The well known Color Monte is a bit controversial in that it is actually not a Jim Temple invention. It actually began in Ibidem by Ed Marlo with Quick 3 Way and Bill Goldman's work on the plot. Also of note is a superior handling of Color Monte by Richard Kaufman called "On the BMT" in his book Cardmagic. |

Thanks for writing Vlad, I do think gaffed effects hit hard due to such great magicians like Helder Guimaraes, Derek DelGaudio, Steve Valentine ect.& never I have heard or seen someone ask "is it examinable" that means nothing to me & I have never been asked that question ever when I have performed with gaffs, I guess it in your performance. I love all packet tricks but I think when that gaff card comes into play it hits hard is what I was saying. I love all your choices I love Presto Printo, Im a big fan of all those you named.
