My girlfriend got me some fingernail polish for my birthday. Not clear, but colored. Chanel Rebel Blue, to be precise. It matches my tattoos, she thought.
So I painted my nails and went to class as usual. Never have I experienced such a strange reaction. It seems that men can color their hair, tattoo their whole bodies, pierce their ears, noses and lips, shave their body hair, and otherwise decorate themselves any way they wish. But fingernail polish crosses a line that freaks people out. This amuses me. Most guitar players I know are no strangers to fingernail polish--but clear, not colored. Add color, and you become a topic of discussion. I suppose eye shadow and lipstick might have the same effect. Guess what I'm asking for for Christmas? Rules about these kinds of things amuse me. Who makes the rules? |

It was merely the context. They did not expect this from YOU.

I suppose. But the first class I showed up in consisted nearly entirely of first-year students who had no idea who I am.
I was also wearing some very expensive, tailor-made clothes and a bow-tie. It seems to me I was just well-dressed. |

Stereotypes about how people past a certain age are supposed to look and dress die hard.
If it makes you happy, who cares what anyone else thinks? As for the bowtie...THAT I have problems with. |

First year students had not had a chance to form opinions of Jeff based upon information about him specifically. They have only stereotyping and preconceptions upon which to base their mental image. Jeff presented an inconsistency to that image resulting in what he described.

It's the notion of permitting someone else to decorate you that way (wonder what they did to your toenails and elsewhere) or to be making an effor yourself to decorate (do you change the color to match your socks?) that folks find at question in context. Will this be on the test? What color was my nail polish on friday 05/23/14? bonus for ten points - what brand of nail polish?
The answer is usually ... "what do I wish to present to be effective in my transactions" does it have to be "hey look I just bought a copy of Aladdin Sane"? have fun

Them who have the gold make the rules. The rules they have made state that you must wear blue nail polish and be happy. That’s perfect socialism.

Bow-tie, nail polish and Tinkerbell. This a class in semiotics?

Although I'm not of the nail polish persuasion,
you are in great company. If blue is good enough for Johnny Depp, it's good enough for you. |

Congratulations, tommy, on managing the get socialism into this thread!
Just wondering, though- If I started a thread about classic Mickey Mouse cartoons, how would you go about finding a socialism angle? |

I also showed up in a seminar for graduate students, which meant that most of them knew me. Not only were they not particularly surprised, but two of them stayed after class to give me tips about using undercoats and overcoats (which I didn't know about), since my banjo playing had chipped some of the paint on two of my fingers. Maybe expensive nail polish and clawhammer just don't mix. We'll see. I'll try applying an undercoat and overcoat next time.
Michael is basically right: this is mostly about expectations. People sign up for a class for "Dr Unhinged", yet still are surprised when the professor isn't wearing tweed. |

I once experienced the cutest and most naive form of this phenomenon. A very young girl at one of my shows blurted out, "Why do you have a pony tail? You're not a girl."
