Was hired to perform for a birthday party this past saturday. It was inner city and not a very good area, which doesn't bother me at all because kids are kids no matter where you perform. The show went great. The crowd was great.
What saddened me was, as I was packing up, they had rap music BLARING loud with the most filthy music you could listen to. I heard the "N" word, the "F" word and more. Really nice. A family party with lots of kids, all ages, and everyone was just totally oblivious to it. What is wrong with people? I just shook my head, collected my pay graciously, smiled at everyone and left. . .

When I lived in Ireland I had a regular post-Christmas gig in a well to do area. My show was for ages up to ten and then there would be a disco for the up to sixteens.
On this occasion, as soon as I had finished the DJ started with (again BLARING) "Does anyone want to F*** now?" with that lyric being repeated many times. Not one parent noticed. |

I'm afraid that's how much of the real world is becoming today. Times are changing for sure.
I agree it is sad that so many can't respect kids enough to watch what they say/do in front of them. Tom

I look at it as sad too, but by now I am used to it. It happens a lot in Detroit. The part I hate the most is when I smell marijuana in the house.

So sad to hear. It's like the odds are stacked against them from the get go.

It has gotten to the point that kids don't even absorb what the lyrics mean anymore. What was shocking years ago, has become the norm. I will sometimes ask what certain songs say, what did they mean, and the kids either don't know, or just chuckle. What is even more disturbing is to see kids as young as 14 grinding, and simulate certain behavior on a dance floor. They feel like this will make them look more adult like.

Si Senior Tommy. I've seen this starting 15 years ago.
I've been at parties with marble houses or cheaply built houses and it occurs at both. I really hate when the adults are all drunk and NO ONE is watching infants or toddlers around the pool If I see that I will deputise people.

Have to agree, Tommy. It's tragic what's going on in our society. Kids just don't have a chance.

I guess that's why I specialize in kids and family shows - to give a break from this other so-called entertainment. Maybe I am old fashioned but I still think children should be allowed to be children. They grow up fast enough.
Some of the crap on TV that is sometimes made specifically for kids can be shocking too.

In both of my jobs (counseling and entertainment)I have worked with street people and family's who have streets named after them.
This is not a new thing in either worlds. With tongue in cheek Why can't they be like we were perfect in every way. Thanks to all for being a bright spot. And those that are parents , grandparents or special someone, who guides our youth. Harris Still too old to know it all

This subject hits me hard, not only because of what I do and see, but because I have a 14 year old son. Suffice it to say that I have lived in a state of constant, exponentially increasing terror for the last 14 years and 9 months.
I think the greatest challenge the human race faces is that our technology has far, far, far out-stripped our morality. On the flip side I've been to parties where the parents were amazing. I recently did a 2 hour party for the daughter of an art dealer and his wife. At the height of the party there were about 40 kids in a 10'x30' room. I made swords, usually a bad idea given the density of children per square foot. I watched in amazement as the kids went off to fight imaginary enemies (together!) instead of instantly trying to beat the hell out of each other. I've done a lot of thinking on this subject, and what I've come to is that some people treat parenthood as a "sacred" RESPONSIBILITY, and some (most, unfortunately) people treat their children as property. It really is as simple as that imo.
If you need fear to enforce your beliefs, then your beliefs are worthless.

Unfortunately, dropping the F-bomb has become accepted socially it seems.
A couple years ago my wife and I were walking up to a store and there were two boys around 11 yrs old hopping on their bicycles. One of the boys sped off while is friend was having some problem with the pedal and gear. The first boy yells for his buddy to hurry up. My wife and I were only 6 feet away when the boy with the minor bike problem yelled at the top of his lungs that he was trying to get his F-ing bike going. For a second I debated about grabbing his bicycle jerking it up into the air and tossing it. But knowing how those things turn out, I would have been made the villain. The real sad part is knowing things are not going to get better. |

So my next thought was to tell him to watch his language in front of a lady. But I knew he would simply probably tell me to F off and then it would have been him and me in a public argument and once again I would look like the villain arguing with a kid. Then when he goes home his parents would probably be on his side. |

... Or offer to help with his bike, and suggest that while we all get frustrated we should be aware the the F bomb can offend ladies nearby ( with a knowing smile that we are all part of the " boys club") . No young teenager needs a lecture from us old goats!
Kids are still finding their way. They are mostly good; they just need guidance. |
