I opened your video. Your first sentence turned me OFF!
I KNOW Silly Billy (we have worked on the same bill at a NATIONAL CONVENTION. I KNOW David Ginn! (since 1976). "TAKE YOU TO THE 'NEXT LEVEL'"!!!!! (that's a quotation--YOU said it) NO DEALER CAN TAKE YOU TO THE "NEXT LEVEL"!!! NO PROP CAN TAKE YOU TO THE "NEXT LEVEL"!!! THE PERFORMER IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN THE PROP! Years ago, we had "bedroom magic dealers". Are we now going to have "KITCHEN REVIEWERS"? May I suggest that you submit your CREDENTIALS, FIRST!

What he SHOULD have done first was the same thing Christopher T Magician did on HIS vids: anticipate the sour responses from people on the Café and defuse them in advance. (go ahead....look at the opening of Chris' first vid)
He's giving his opinions on vidsets (NOT 'props') and really the only "credentials" someone needs to give a review of a vidset is to have watched it! He dosent go into the whole philosophy about the performer vs. the prop, but he DOES seem to agree that the performance is more important because he's promoting vids which teach techniques, not gimmicks.
Everybody wants to beleive.....we just help them along.

What he SHOULD HAVE DONE, and WHAT HE DID are two different things.
Before one starts "preaching", one should do one's homework, and get some experience. Nemo dat quod non habet! (No one gives what he does not have. The philosphy about the performer and the prop is an important concept to understand. BTW: How does one "teach" gimmicks? I've been a paid performer for 68 years. I use a few gimmicks, but, I've never taught one anything. (Words have meanings!) I could not bear to watch this after the first minute when he started with: Silly Billy's stuff, and David Ginn's stuff taking someone to the "next level".

I have to agree with Harris. This forum is all about sharing, some good stuff, some not so good stuff. If no one was to share then there would be no forum.

Danny Orlean's jumbo coloring routine and giant multiplying wands alone is worth the price of the DVD. I also agree with your comments about Christopher T Magician.

My thoughts are, you don't have to be great to talk about great people. I didn't have time to watch it all, but I don't have to because I already know that Ken Scott, Danny Orleans, and Christopher T are well worth listening to. The poster didn't do wrong by recommending those three. I would do the same.

I agree with Tom. It's a harmless video that is promoting people that he respects and gets a lot out of. I'm a huge Ken Scott fan, as a person, and performer, and love what he said about him.

J. Rodriguez, I am sorry about those attempting to slam you for no reason. It happened to me several times too. I am glad you are staying strong by ignoring it. The bottom line is this is a new world. It is time to share. You did the right thing and should not have done any different. We are so proud of you. Thanks for sharing, dude.

May I suggest that if someone wants to take their magic to a higher level, really wants to take it higher level, that you dig a little deeper and discover that there is a whole range of excellent material that is rarely mentioned and is a virtual goldmine.
Kid Stuff Volume 5, the largest of the Kid Stuff books by Frances Marshall and specifically aimed at school performers, though just as useful to any kidshow performer. Open Sesame, by Lewis and Tyler, Children's Parties a Speciality by Peter D'Arcy, Laughter All the Way by Ron Bishop, the Eric Sharp books, full of original routines and crammed with gags and patter. These books were published in the UK and not all easy to find but well worth the effort and usually available from second hand dealers in the UK As for DVDs. Buy a set of the old 'Lucy' TV shows and study the reactions of Lucielle Ball and Gale Gordon. The art of the 'double take' and how to react to something going wrong - to get maximum reaction - seems to be lost on today's performers. The laughter builds with the pause. As I learnt from Bev Bergeron many years ago, and it took me years to fully understand, the difference between amateurs and professionals is ... pausing. |

Quentin, I completely agree with you on studying old TV shows and movies like Lucy - and newer guys like Jim Carey. And learning comic timing, etc. I bet those old books are good too. I see a lot of performers who are pretty good and get plenty of laughs, but are they highly skilled at comedy, are they masters? Not too many.

I took a look at the review video that J. Rodriguez put out after I read Dick Oslund's review of the video. I think there was maybe a misunderstanding there Dick. From what I heard J, responded to a question by some guy who wanted to take his performance to the next level and wanted to know besides David Ginn, Silly Billy, and Chris Capehart who would he recommend. J. Rodriguez recommended three people that have helped his performance.
Dick from your post I thought he was going to be bashing Silly Billy and David Ginn. Now I do agree with you that no one dealer or prop can take you to the next level. I think however, that you can get some good information from that dealer on performing that will help improve an area you might be having trouble with. That is just an observation of mine. I could be wrong. |

J Rodriguez never claims to be an expert, he's just giving his opinion. His video is nothing more than a "My 3 favorite children's magicians are...." If one has never heard of these magicians before then his video would be helpful. He clearly states these are not the only 3 magicians to learn from, he's saying take the time to learn more about them and their products. That's good advice.
I'm tempted to list my 3 favorite children's magicians but its really hard choose just three. There have been so many that have influenced me, but certainly Duane Laflin and David Ginn are on the list, and I want to give a thumbs up to Kid Stuff 5 and Open Sesame as well.
