I firstly knew about this trick in Martin Gardner's column in Scientific American and, recently, I discovered the following interesting paper in the American Mathematical Monthly

K. Eisemann. Number-Theoretic Analysis and Extension of ’The Most Complicated and Fantastic Card Trick Ever Invented’.
American Mathematical Monthly, 91:284–289, 1984.

Thanks for the pointer. Sadly enough, I am at the end of the weekend, so its reading will have to wait until next Friday evening.
So much to do, so little time . . .

That trick is in the 2nd volume of the collected works of Alex Elmsley, it's caller The Darkest Peirce.

Thanks Scott, I just came upon this thread. I didn't have a pdf of my article as published myself, so this comes in handy. This was so short because the editor needed a filler in what was to be largely a Peirce issue.

I do have a copy of the pdf of my "Peirce and the Continuum" from the same issue, but that's getting too far afield even for those interested in "Magical Equations."
