I am looking for suggestions on how to transform a white sponge egg into a brown one. I have thought of shoe polish, but that would likely be too messy when performing with them. I have thought of brown paint, but am concerned it would chip and crumble when squeezed. Any other ideas? I have inexpensive sponge eggs ( $3.75 each) from Magic Warehouse. If anyone knows where to purchase brown sponge eggs, that would be most welcome as well.

I suggest you try brown magic marker that is permanent, hobby stores should have. If not use the furniture scratch covering markers sold at hardware stores, Wal-Mart type stores, and home improvement centers. These markers for furniture come in several different shades of wood stain. Think that should work for you.

The problem with using marking pens is that you will not get a nice smooth coating of the brown. Instead, it will look as if it was applied by marking pens (which it was!). The key is to color clear alcohol with the marking pen color, then dip in the egg as if it were an Easter egg, except since it is likely to float and not go under willingly, you may need to hold it under with tongs. You can also pour the colored alcohol into a sprayer bottle and spray it on the egg.

Thanks for the ideas! I will get to this on the weekend and report back on how it turns out.

How about cutting open the marker and pouring the ink in a pan and rolling the egg around until you get an even coating?
Also I heard Tea stains, you could try making a dark tea and try that as well. Then there is paint stain, that may work. Just have to try some things and see what works best. |

Easter Egg coloring dye may work as well.

So far I am 0 for 1. I decide to apply wood stain to the sponge egg with a paint brush. The result: the color is pretty good. The problem is that the egg has lost it's shape recovery time. It now takes far too long to bounce back from being squeezed. I think I need a way to color the cover without it being absorbed by the sponge. Perhaps some of the suggestions here will not effect the sponge the way staining it did, so I will try egg # 2 in the next few days. Thanks for the suggestions.

Just a thought but did you rinse the egg with water after you dye job? Wood stain works fast, so letting it dry to long may have effected the sponge. Of course using rubber gloves would protect you from getting your fingers stained with dye.

Don't over look strong tea as a good stain.

I know someone who goes the other way and spraypaints his EGGS white to match the gimmick.

I would go with the Rit dye as recommended by MrG. This was my first though, but I'm glad someone else thought of it. The best part is you can control how dark you want to go. It shouldn't rub off on you, and I don't think it would affect the shape.
