France is certainly showing a big improvement from their dismal performance here in South Africa 4 years ago...

Portugal 2 - 2 USA. Fabulously entertaining. The Jones and Varela goals were absolute beauties!

The USA deserved to win. But deserve has nothing to do with it. But what a game.

If only the USA had just kept the ball in conner at the death, which is exactly where you want it at that point in time. That pass was foolish, inexperience.

I can't really remember. I think they underestimated the USA and the second goal woke them up. I did not think the USA would hang on after that, but they did and when they had them dead and buried, when the kid had it in the conner, well I just could not believe he passed it out. Still it was great game.

I had to work tonight, but after reading the other posts/rants about the US/Portugal game, it sounds like Bradley did it again. He has been hyped and praised for his play prior to the Cup, but he has IMO been the biggest disappointment of the US team. In the final minutes of the game vs Ghana, Bradley almost gave it away by taking a long shot or wild pass that gave Ghana one last try at a goal. Looks like he did it again tonight. If I were a conspiracy theorist, I'd say he was deliberately throwing these games. His play has been that bad. Hats off to the other players for stepping it up against a very tough foe.

Agree with Alex in that France has really improved since the last WC. The announcers talk as if everyone is waiting to see if they will implode, but so far so good.

Thanks for that, Stone. That view is often taboo in conventional conversation. Dave Zirin, who is mentioned in the article, has done some great reporting and thinking about sports and culture. Anything by him is worth looking at.

Meh, I thought every culture critic knew that modern team sports are a proxy for tribal warfare. A bunch of guys who aren't from my city are paid to pretend that they are, and then go through a ritual combat with guys pretending to be from a nearby city. And somehow we feel better about ourselves for it.
International sport at least has the advantage that "my" team do have something in common with me--our passports are issued by the same government. But they're mercenaries all the same. And politicians love to use the mock battles to support their parties. Yet, somehow, sport is like art. There is something oddly compelling about human excellence in almost any context. And the uniquely(?) human capacity for empathy allows us to be part of the tribal battle, risk-free. What's often lacking is the capacity to see the spectacle for what it is, and to let go when the game is over. And above all else, to remember that when "our" team wins or loses, it really does have no bearing on our quality as people.

I know England need a shoulder to cry on after an early exit, but Suarez needs a shoulder to chew on during Uruguays' advance to the knockout stages.
A hefty ban hopefully! I once got 56 days for getting sent off on Saturday for punching and knocking out an opponent, and Sunday, the day after, for dropping the nut on somebody, also knocking him out. In my defence, I was provoked both times. Two times 28 day bans is a long time to be on the sidelines, but he deserves more!
