Over the next few days I will be posting a daily blog on the build of the mermaid. It needs to be complete and ready to ship to Derby on Friday so it’s going to be tight! I’ve made many bizarre props and creatures over the years but never a FeeJee Mermaid so I will be pulling together a whole host of building methods, techniques and idea I’ve never realised to hopefully create something worth displaying this coming Saturday.

Thanks Dan! I was researching Feejee Mermaids just last week. It's a great topic, and I'm really looking forward to the rest of your blog installments.

Fascinating stuff Dan. Looking forward to getting the fairy kit to get going on some gaffs of my own. For now the less ambitious gaff project of a leaf from Jack's beanstalk.

Makes for good reading I don't know where you get the patience for making all these things, but do keep on making them.
We all love seeing what you come up with.
By failing to prepare, we are preparing to fail.

A master class Dan. It looks amazing. Little things like the candle base really helps to sell it. The attention to detail is a good lesson thanks.

Thanks for sharing Dan! I really appreciate that you are taking the time to share your process even when you're pressed for time. I also agree with your comments about learning from each other. I'm quite jealous of the 3d printer. That's the next thing on my ever-growing wish list. I, too, like the speed of the air-dry. Of course, it won't crack if you allow it to dry slowly, but that kinda defeats the purpose. Although, I have been playing around with a paper mache version of air dry clay. You can add various filaments to the mix to add strength and/or flexibility. If I can figure out a good mix that gives quick drying with minimal cracking, I'll let you know.
Also wanted to suggest something I use from time to time. Plaster bandages, cut into thin strips. It dries quick, hard, and doesn't crack. It's easy to work with and incredibly pliable before it sets. It is great for small, fragile areas because the cloth part of the strips adds strength. It also feels pretty believable as "bones" under silicone skin. And of course, it's relatively cheap compared to other alternatives, and in a pinch you can easily make your own if you run out. It does add some heft to your piece, so that's something to consider, though. Anyways, I look forward to seeing the rest of your blog posts on the mermaid. It's looking great! |

Wow, thanks for sharing. You are so generous of time, effort and your ingenious creativity! My artistic work is limited to oil painting, acrylics, some drawing,...but I am looking forward to receiving my fairy project in the late summer and it will be a fun Fall challenge!
