So I'm curious for those of you who use the Lybrary or Lulu, if you are releasing an e-book, whats the benefit of using these services. I have self released a few things lately, and I am thinking about using Lybrary as well, but I'm not sure if there is actually a benefit in that.

Also...

Started a new shop page on my site, go check it out! It has a password that you should all be able to figure out to get to the secret stuff...

Art Vanderlay and Luca Volpe gave me some great reviews on my newest little offering. Check that out at the link below.

I publish my stuff with Lybrary and I am more than happy with the service Chris provides. For me, the benefits over self-publishing are clear:

There are no up-front charges.

You receive a good share of all proceeds from sales, certainly when compared with the percentages paid to authors by traditional publishers.

In terms of traffic, Lybrary is about one of the top 100,000 websites in the world, and top 20,000 in the US. It is unlikely that any personal site will come close to that.

Lybrary handles all the advertising and other promotion, and all financial transactions (no need for your own shop front). Royalty payments are made direct to your PayPal account, and you can withdraw royalties whenever and as often as you like.

As a Lybrary author, you get 10% discount on other Lybrary products, and you can pay for purchases directly from your royalty account. This also means that other Lybrary authors are more likely to buy your own works.

You don't have to worry about dealing with customers, nor about website maintenance, bandwidth or download limits because everything is handled by the Chris and the Lybrary servers.

You get access to your own account page on which you get up-to-date information on all sales made, and on how many individuals have bought your stuff.

As a specialist publisher, Lybrary is very well known and highly respected among the magical fraternity. Customers buy with confidence, knowing that all the products they have bought are safely stored in their digital shelf (i.e., cloud) and can be downloaded whenever they wish.

All this and the fantastic, incredibly efficient, personal attention that you get from Chris.

Given that the market for magic ebooks is pretty small, you are very unlikely to make more money running your own operation, unless you are very famous or expect to sell LOTS!

For some outside perspective of that. I wrote an academic book that was published in 2008, in order for me to receive ANY royalty payment I need to sell over 200 units in any one quarter of the year, then, only then, the whole year is ON and I get a percentage of all sales. I have not recieved a payment yet. Super glad I spent 65k on my education.... now I'm trying to make a career as a psychic entertainer...... I think I need some career guidance!!

These days, mainstream print publishers typically give run-of-the-mill authors 7% or 8% of publisher's receipts. With the discounts that publishers give to retailers, this means that authors are lucky if they receive 4% of the book's shop price. I.e., for a book selling at $10, the author might get about 40 cents per copy.

Of course the publishers shoulder all the risks, and all the costs of printing, promotion, distribution, etc.

Also, but unjustifiably in my opinion, mainstream publishers tend to give authors only 7% or 8% for ebook releases of their works.

Why not do both? I sell via my own site, Lybrary, and Penguin. My own site, promoted mainly through my mailing list and Facebook, brings in around 75% of my income. After that, for me, Penguin sells slightly more than Lybrary.

But don't limit yourself to just one outlet. The idea is to have as many as possible, enabling you to reach different audiences.

You get a slightly larger percentage from Lybrary if you agree to allow them to be the exclusive seller of your products.

All my manuscripts are available from Lybrary, and I have been very happy with how Chris handles business.

Paul, Thank you for the mention.

Stuart, if you were curious, at Penguin Magic royalties are 60% (and 70% if it's exclusive).

Very good advice. Broad distribution optimizes revenue.

That has not been my experience. I have never been offered anything that low. And I get way more on ebooks.

Mr Palm is asking if he should self release. The school boy in me is trying to stifle a laugh. Smile

Actually I'm more wanting to know if others experiences with these services have been worth it. I have sold things before unrelated to magic with varying degrees of success. Sometimes releasing something yourself and leaving it at that can be better sometimes not.

Mr. Austin, from what I know of laughter and happiness it's best not to stifle it as laughter is good for your health and continued well being. However, if you are laughing at someone out of malice, this can is not good for your soul. Bit then if one was to stifle a laugh so as to not project negativity, they probably wouldn't want to publish this.

Thank you everyone for your very helpful advice and knowledge.

As someone who is much aware of school boy nature, I can assure you sealegs was sniggering at the term "self-release."

"Austin? Austin? Stop that sniggering over your smutty little joke. And see me after school young man. Then we'll see who has the last laugh."

The Magic Nook offers 90% royalties provided you are willing to price your e-Book at $5.00 (or $40 for a collection of 10 e-Books). Just letting you know where we fit in. You can deal with customers directly with your own PayPal business account, or we will handle it for you and send you your royalties once a month. Non-exclusive agreement.
