Dinner flowers. Nice.
And to paraphrase Nietzsche If it don't kill us it is fodder for comedy and future Patter. Some reserved for our magic clubs and online friends and acquaintances.

Dick all the card effects I do don't require a f***e at all. It is just something I do in case I would "lose" the card. To me it doesn't matter if they take the f***e because I just control the card, but it is a good out.

May the 4th be with you and perhaps we can learn as much from failures
as the highlights of our shows. My steep learning curve started in open mikes and coffee houses in the 70's. To paraphrase Dick , I try not to speak ill of my shows where I died. I have learned not to let fear grab me when stuff happens When I was greener, shows that started off like that , took nose Dives. And from Harris' nose, that's quite a jump, said Nigel. ( the puppet that rocks and talks)

I agree, Andy. Force all the time, even if you don't need it. If for no other reason, it's great practice.
Harris, forgive me. That was meant to be dinner AND flowers. |

10/4 ANDY! It's just good practice--and good insurance--I want as many odds as possible in my favor.

During my card effect in the show, I always have a glimps to check if it is correctly controled to the top to make sure I fold the correct card.
I once folded two cards at once, but I managed to reveal only the correct card. The second one, I kept it hidden and appearantly nobody noticed. After walking on stage the release of my appearing glass in the beginning of the show released itself somehow. Luckely I could catch the glass in my jacket, but the liquid spilled on the floor. My jacket wasn't really wet...ouffff. So I looked on the floor, to the audience, again to the floor and back to th audience and asked them : Someone couldn't find the toilets before the show ? They had a good laugh and the show went on. Doing the Gyspy Thread, I once had a problem with the final string. It didn't unravel correctly and got knotted. So I took the whole knotted string in my hand rolled it up and transformed it into confetti as an end of the effect. Those things happened to me and others may happen later... Some you can prevent, by having a plan B, others you have to keep calm and react naturally. Until now, I always was lucky to get the right comedy line, naturally without too much thinking. So I think, if you're natural, human, and don't play the role of a guy who knows everything better then any other, the audience, if ever they notice anything, will forgive you... hopefully. Oliver. |

It depends on the nature of the failure and the mood of the crowd. I might pretend it didn't happen (they don't have my script in front of them, they can't always tell it was the failure I know it to be). More often though, I make a joke out of it. Usually I say something like "well, this is going pretty well so far". I've actually had a show just fall apart for one reason or another. One time a well meaning aunt passed out goodie bags during my show that contained cans of silly string. Once the kids discovered it and started squirting each other with it, and no adults intervened, I simply said "well this is going south in a hurry, lets make balloons!" Above all, never appear flustered or frustrated, even if you are,. And of course, sometimes we are.

As far as how I personally handle the failure, I write it down and learn from it, but I don't let it ruin my day. In live performance things go wrong too often to get really upset by it. It would make me miserable and I prefer to have fun, even if this is my job.

Usually things go quite well for me except recently, mostly because of battery failure, and recent items I bought.
I recently bought a used Jumbo Sidekick, and I had almost new no name brand Alkaline batteries in it. All the table did was let the rose fly in the air. I also bought a remote controlled blooming rose. For some weird reason, even turned off it seems to eat up the batteries. Anyway, that worked twice and failed twice. I now take the batteries out as soon as the show is finished. I also screwed up a linking ring and rope routine recently, which never happens to me. My 8 year old grand-daughter handed me the wrong ring showing the key ring. I just go on as if nothing happened. |

Hey Michael! You had a rattlesnake! Egad! The worst "interruption" that I can remember was a kitty cat, that wandered on stage, and smelling the doves in their carry case, began stalking them. It was a tremendous laugh, followed by a show stop laugh when I stalked the cat -- and gently removed it. I'll tell (as Paul Harvey used to say) "the rest of the story" in the book!

Hi,
I have a gread idea for a problem with the Jumbo Sidekick. I put always an envelope with a prediction downwards at the table. I mention that we would need them in an emergency. In this envelope is a jumbo card number higher than the forced card. For example, 7 of spades chosen by the audience and there is the 8 of spades inside with a corner which is missing. If the Jumbo Sidekick is not working I point to the emergency prediction and say that here is your card an pull out so that the missing corner is not shown. Spectators say no this is not the correct card they had the 7 of spades. Then I indicate that the 8 of spades has 8 symbols and the 7 of spades must have 7 symbols....I wait for the confirmation and then removes slowly the prediction jumbo card and show that there is a 8 of spades with 7 symbols. It is a great ending |

I make some sort of slip up every show I do. All sorts of things from forgetting which card I forced to palming four cards instead of three. I don't bat an eyelid over it and it doesn't make the blindest bit of difference. Some magicians try to be perfect. I consider that an imperfection in itself. I would far rather be human than perfect. Audiences like that.
