So Crooks Are The Enemy?
Well, for a lot of people they probably are, but, for me, they are the competition.
If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.

Very serious thread here. Personally, I stopped doing DVDs and lectures just because of the torrents. These guys were born with pc, and are used to have almost anything with a click of the mouse, and yes, they want to share it with "the community". They even can spend VERY long time making a huge pdf out of pictures of thousand pages, just to release it for free in a torrent. They think money is ****, and everything should be for nothing for everybody. I know that because I analysed the problem years ago, debating if I should or should not do another DVD and lecture... Well, I don't anymore.
And Arnold, the worst is: the more it is expensive, the more they will want to share it with everybody. Take the 1st Berglas book: expensive and rare: it was very soon on torrents. I could multiply the exemples. Even the Magik magazine is on torrents. Thousand of pages, costs a lot. They don't care. It is expensive? Great, let's spread it around the community. That's how it works now, and nobody can do anything about it, even if they shut some big sites from time to time... The only solution (which is not a solution) should be to code the book or the DVD in some way to know who is the guy who gave this around, AND SO WHAT? You catch him (or his friend, or a friend of a friend...)and so what? Thousands will do the same after him. Some months ago I even found on the internet a trick that was not yet advertised in magic magazines. Can you believe that? Other times (and very often) I bought some books, DVDs, routines, and I saw them for free on the internet. Frustrating, hu? Not only that, but in my time, we had the notion of "secrets". We knew the value of secrets. They don't care secrets. Everybody should know how it is done - for free of course. Just tape any name of routine on Youtube and see the result with the "tuto". Welcome to the XXIth century, guys.

People who uploaded these PDF's really screwed LEGITIMATE students like me from EVER being able to BUY anything from Arnold. I don't care how much the price is, I still believe in paying for information and have an extensive library to back it up! I'm not a wannabe, I work hard at what I do and I hate being put in the same box as a guy who's under 30 and doesn't know anything about the value of information and just wants to share with the community! F the community!
My mentor is good friends with most of the heavy weights in this field and I've been let in on A LOT of unpublished material/notebooks that will NEVER be uploaded to any torrent site, because I'm a true and serious student of card cheating/magic and technique. none of these youtube clowns know what I'm doing, I create my own stuff. Period. I rarely post here, but had to about this. |

Again, I'm not against trading. I can't deny all my years hacking computers (often professionally and, even if it may surprise some people here, rarely on the "black" side!) and I traded myself. Besides, the Magic world has always being based on trading. Mentors teaching secrets to students, but secrets that came from a trade with another master, etc. You want another Magician to give details about his best secret? He's gonna ask for something in return (and not necessarily money, far from it).
There are also, in my opinion, many reasons "justifying" downloading, trading, sharing, etc. For instance, a movie is not sold anymore, the author of a book died 85 years ago, no one holds a copyright on it and the work is not important enough for someone putting money for reprinting it. Without trading, that movie/book will disappear. Another case is an old book, not spread, not very famous, like a few dozens copies only, which doesn't even cost a lot (like $5 in specialized shops!) which, again, would "disappear" from memories if no one would share it. Or the item is "rare" (say a famous magic book now), only owned by a few collectors (who usually never even open it...which is what I hate the most!) who sell it once in a while, at ridiculous prices (I'm thinking about Fulve's books here for instance). It prevents legitimate and fair students to buy/access the information and allows only a few guys to... speculate (not sure they even care about Magic). I could give a dozen of "legitimate" reasons. And let's be honest, I like the world of Magic/Gambling but hey, ethical code is kinda low here! Magicians stealing others Magicians secrets (Hilliard being a famous case), vendors stealing customers (we talked about Busby recently here), etc. And the worst, hypocrisy. I could name 100 top Magicians who are members of P2P networks!! Plus the ones who haven't got the guts to put themselves into this business and who are using "ghost" people. We're not in lalaland here, just into the world as it is. But we have different people today. A new generation thinking, like JJS said, that all must be for free. And I can't stand it! Nothing's for free in this world, nothing. People can be cool, offering their time, do voluntary work, help people, etc. But you have to work to make some money for your living. And stealing those people's work just prevent them to make their living! That generation, their mentality is pitiful. How can you steal or share a book you can buy for 3$ on Amazon? What's the point to detail publicly a secret routine on Youtube? What's the idea here? I rubbed shoulders with many movies, music, etc. hackers in the past and I couldn't understand them. I met guys who had 20,000 or even 25,000 movies on their hardrives. Or hundred thousands of MP3s. What's the point? I hear some people saying "items are too expensive". Well, first, get a job, try to make your living before complaining; you're not gonna be the first one to have money problems! Last, what are you talking about? $1 for a song is expensive? $40 for an excellent booklet is expensive? I don't get them. They watch crap on the TV all day long and they can't understand that something of value must be... paid? In another hand they can spend $600+ for a stupid and useless smartphone build by slaves in China and they want to teach us lessons about how life is supposed to go? What's wrong with those guys? It looks like they just live for bragging, showing off: I have 25,000 PDFs, I screwed Steve Forte's last DVD, I know 250 secrets and let me expose them on Youtube. To me, it falls under psychiatry... The new guys have a weird way of thinking. Myself, I've broken dozens of software securities, I have hacked many computers, etc. But I've never being proud of it. Yeah, a bit of proficiency but so what? When I released my first few pages long time ago, then I was proud, because I created something! But are those guys able to create? They say they help the community but they are wrong, they are stealing the community. If you want to help the community, design, invent, create! I don't expect everyone to be perfect, I'm far from being it myself and I've been 30 years old too. But I'd like people to use some brain cells (provided we all have some) once in a while. |

Sorry to hear about this Arnold -- that s*cks.
Consider marking every page. Some of the top screenwriters use this method -- feel free to PM me if you want more details. |

Whatever the method you use: using blank spaces, adding hidden marks, typos, changing words, altering figures elements, modifying some spaces width, adding invisible watermarks, etc. -> Someone motivated will break it... And very often, it's far easier to do than you may think!!!
Suffice to get two copies and end of the story. Re-scanning, screenshots, re-editing, etc., there are 1,000 ways to ### your original work. Videos? You want to protect a video shooting scenes with some elements varying from one scene to another? Well, just get two copies and make a third variant out of it! It would take 1 hour with any serious video editor software. That way, the vendor would not even know what that copy is!!! I'm telling you, it's impossible to find a sure and safe method. It's been my job to break all those things for years... You just can make hackers task more and more difficult, nothing else. It takes a lot of energy, it's time consuming and the end result is breakable anyway! And even if you know where the file/video comes from, so what? Maybe someone just stole the laptop/tablet of the guy... A jerkoff just betrayed my trust, that's all. The end result is that my motivation is gone. I'll release probably one or two more projects (expensive, trust me!), but that's the end of it. This generation is just full of ###. Their turn to create now, we'll see what fantastic material those arrogant ### will release. Here's my bet: nothing. Stealing and criticizing is easy, creating and helping is another story! |

Judging by the amount of useless *+=** being sold as the latest miracle, I think we are already seeing what these people have to offers NOTHING.
By failing to prepare, we are preparing to fail.
