Eugene Burger has published his version of Maurice Fogel's Triple Prediction. Does anyone know the original reference for this trick? That is to ask, did Fogel publish this trick? I am familiar with Burger's published version and I know the trick is based on an old principal that has quite a number of applications. I'm just curious about why it is sometimes referred to as "Fogel's Triple Prediction."

Some time ago, I did a research on the origin of Fogel's Triple Prediction myself. First of all, Maurice Fogel never claimed the invention of the trick. In his 1978 lecture notes he explained it, leading in with: "Some years ago a fellow showed me a trick in my dressing-room. I’ve never seen it in print, although that of course doesn’t mean it hasn’t been published. It has served me well over the years and, with due respect to the originator, here it is." However, Fogel certainly popularized the trick, which is now associated with his name.
The underlying principle - The Double Deal Force - is probably one of the oldest principles in card magic. A simple trick utilizing the Double Deal Force appeared as early as 1690 in the german book DAS ZEITKÃœRZENDE LUST- UND SPIEL-HAUS (Rough translation "The pastime house of fun and games") by Eberhard Welper. |

Uli, thank you for the well researched and well explained answer to my question. I was familiar with the "Double Deal Force" and have seen that principle used in a number of different tricks. However, I didn't know it had a name. Thank you for that piece of information as well. By the way, your English is excellent. I wish I spoke a second language half as well as you write English.

Eugene Burger's version of it, in "Mastering the Art of Magic," is wonderful ... full of subtleties that disguise the method.
