I just got some silver dollars I ordered from Midwest Magic and since they were wrapped in plastic and tape, some of the tape sort of melted parts of the plastic onto the coins, so the coins have blue stains on them,
Any ideas on how to remove the stains? I got some by scraping with a knife. Silver dollars fit my hands best, I have finally decided |

Perhaps a solvent will work - or heat them a little and then rub off the .... with a toothbrush

Metal on metal often scrapes the metal

Call Midwest and ask to have them replaced. Tim is a good guy, he will make it right.

Silver is very soft metal. In Mohs scale, silver is only 2,5. Stainless steel is somewhere between 5,5-6,3. So knife blade will easily scratch silver if you aren't careful.
Mohs scale in short: Harder the metal/mineral, and higher it is also in Mohs scale (talc is 1, diamond is 10.) Harder always scratch softer material... So be careful with your silver coins if you want to keep them in good condition. (I would recommend you to use something softer than silver if you want to scrap them!) There is many things what you can try to do with your coins. (you can find some of them from Magic Café when using search function. Google is also your friend.) But what ever you are trying to do, remember to be careful! I have been using tissue paper as sand paper and I have been using also sugar cubes to sand things clean for example. Sometimes I use plastic knives or wooden toothpick or q-tip to scratch/clean things and so on. Just remember to be careful and do not use too much force. If you need to wet your coins, just use water. Sometimes water help to remove your dirt. (remember that silver don't get rust, other metal coins might!) If you get your silver coins clean and there is still odd color on them, try to remove odd color with silver cleaning solution. IF there still is odd color, you have done pretty much everything what is fast and vice to try. At least in this point, contact to seller and tell how tape left odd color on your coins and even silver cleaner don't remove it. |

Have you tried the adhesive removal material called Goof Off? It is no abrasive and shouldn't damage your coins even it it doesn't take the stains off. You could also try a buffing wheel and jeweler's rouge. It works on silver jewelry. It all depends on what the stains are.

Problem solved. I was outside with the coins and it was hot and humid and the goo from the tape just came right off.

That is great news! Now just handle with care, take care of your coins (if needed) and those coins will last your whole life time and even longer.

Yes, you're right, good point. I need to get some more silver polish stuff. I just moved and I lost the last one I had.
Things I've noticed with silver dollars----dropping coins one at a time from CP is much easier. Three Fly variations that I like are easier, as is most coins across. Speaking of Three Fly, I'm thinking of a presentation about coins getting kicked out of a bar and calling it Bar Fly. |
