I have never powdered manipulation cards before. I always go out and buy new ones. I didn't really feel like spending $8 on a deck of cards again when I just bought them not to long ago so I decided I would powder them. But I did it with baby powder

Now they are worse than they were before. Does anyone know what kind of powder works besides fanning powder?

Or maybe I powdered them using the wrong method??? I thought baby powder would work.

Please let me know!

Hi Brian:

You have several options here. I've never tried baby powder before, but I understand that the composition is not quite right; it's not recommended.

You really do want fanning powder for best results. It's not that expensive. I have always bought mine from Norm Nielson. His website is http://www.nnmagic.com. His powder is excellent.

I think I would get a new set of cards, and powder them with the fanning powder rather than trying to save the deck with baby powder on it. I learned how to powder cards from Dale Salwak of the Chavez School of Magic, and it's so easy. Just get a paper grocery bag (the big type) and spring the cards in it. Then squirt some fanning powder in the bag, close up the bag and shake for a minute or two. Wait a few minutes so the powder can settle, and then open the bag. There will be a lot of powder on the cards. Stack the cards into a deck and give it a few riffles to get rid of the excess powder. You're ready to go; start working with the cards and all the excess powder will wear off after you've played with the cards for about a half hour or so.

While you're at http://www.nnmagic.com, look at the Card Press he sells. If you use this, your cards will last practically forever, and you won't have to keep buying new cards.

Hope this helps you; feel free to ask any questions you have.

Baby Powder should be avoided. Fanning powder which is Zinc Stearate can be used but should be used sparingly. I don't use fanning powder on my manipulation cards. Although the powder makes it easier to fan, they make other moves more difficult IMO.

What I have always done is to take a very little bit of fanning powder and place into a clear bag. Then drop your cards into the bag and seal the top. Then simply shake the bag and cards gently for a while so that the powder covers and coats all the cards. This method works pretty good and helps you to avoid getting your fingerprints and oil on the cards. It also helps to coat them evenly and quickly.

I've never got on with fanning powder and so don't use it. It also gets up my nose and annoys me.

I use one of my fanning sticks to prepare my cards with. It works a bit like the old method of using a paraffin candle but gives it a better grip (at least that is what I think).
