Hello everyone!
My name is Nick Mallay. I am a 21 year old magician from Toronto, Canada. I have been performing for about five years, and have done about 15 paid shows over the last two years. I started with a Jay Sankey street magic DVD and went from there I am starting on here because I recently realized how unbalanced my magical training has been. Looking back it does not seem like it has been five years and during that time magic was never my main focus. Because of this is only ever worked on improving the few skills I knew. I have done hundreds of performances as I have an hour long train ride every day and can always find a willing audience on the train. Because I have always felt "new" to magic I have always been intimidated by trying completely new schools of magic. For example, I am pretty good with a deck of cards, this is pretty much what I have focused on. I can do double lifts, false shuffles / cuts, and so forth well enough that I have not been caught in years, and my pass, while certainly not "magician worthy" can fool spectators with a little misdirection. My cards chops are pretty good and I am confident in them but I have all but ignored other schools of magic. For example my knowledge of coin magic is limited to only a simple french drop. The extent of my mentalist training ends at a simple "magicians choice" style verbal card force (I do not know the name of this effect, where you can force a card by asking them to answer a series of leading questions. Can any tell me?) So because of my magical trainings total imbalance I have decided to start over. I am going to go back and read all of my old magic books and Jay Sankey DVDs (The man sells them for super cheap in Christmas / holiday bundles. I got like 15 for $75 one holiday and that included many gimmicks. Love his customer service!) So I will be learning coin magic, mentalism, and pretty much every thing I can get my hands on. Thank you all so much for being such an amazing community (I have lurked here in the shadows for months, never posting) I wish you all great luck in your performances. |

Welcome Nickmallay,
There is nothing wrong with Card Magic or in improving the skills you have. You are now ready to branch out but you don't need to start over. John Lennon — 'There's nowhere you can be that isn't where you're meant to be.. " Try some rubber band Magic. That would be great on a train. -Mary Mowder |
