I have just begun exploring hypnosis. I have a 12 cd set on conversational hypnosis. I am not looking to use hypnosis as a stage show but more as part of strolling magic. I purchased the effect "mind eraser" and not real confident in performing it since the routine is very vague as to what needs to be learned to perform it. I then purchased a cd set on conversational hypnosis to better educate myself on hypnosis but most of the material appeared to be common sense on how to get rapport with the person your hypnotizing and what tones to talk etc I did however learn some things like getting the person to cooperate and agree etc but I feel like I'm missing something to make this effect work. Does anyone have this effect or can give me advice on getting similar results.

To me conversational hypnosis is nothing like actual induced hypnosis, stage or clinical. If anything it is more akin to NLP and similar related newfangled trends. I'm certainly not a fan of magicians using or pretending to use "hypnosis" or pseudo hypnosis or such magic tricks or effects.

I appreciate you taking the time to say you are not willing to assist me.

No, I WAS assisting you, that's the point.
First I explained that conversational hypnosis is not the same as induced hypnosis Secondly, I explained hypnosis is not a magic trick Third, give your audience more credit than to expect them to believe all this pseudo-babble "hypnosis" is really hypnosis Fourth, why come to hypnotists to ask how to do a fake hypnosis trick, and expect anything other than the truth? |

If you want to learn actual hypnosis, great, begin your study and research. If you want to perform a trick pretending to do hypnosis that has a likely 50% success rate, maybe 60% if you are greatly polished, rehearsed and good, fine too. The only thing about this even remotely resembling hypnosis is a pattern interrupt. Why would one study hypnosis to learn to present a fake hypnosis trick? That's like studying and passing your drivers test to drive the quarter kiddie car outside of Kmart.

Hi TravisNye,
It is much easier than you might imagine. Just start giving suggestions. To do that it will be worthwhile understanding how a suggestion is different to an instruction. It is also worth noting that an induction is just another suggestion. It simply tests the suggestions within the induction itself. Nothing fundamentally changes. There is no need for complex 'conversational' language patterns to do hypnosis without an induction. The ideas are more important than the words. Generally when I have seen Joe and others perform Mind Eraser, they give some simple physical suggestions first to ensure the participant understands their role and is experiencing the effect of suggestion. Then they move into Mind Eraser. This does not mean it cannot be done from cold, but normally it is done from warm Anthony

I appreciate the input Anthony. I am interested in learning hypnosis I feel some effects like mind eraser and doing a lot of suggestibility test are a good way to practice and build confidence. Like I mention I have that 12 disc home study course and I also have a few books etc that I read I guess to me it's hard to believe it is that simple, and that is where I needed the advice. Mainly just to confirm from people who have hypnosis experience. The mind eraser effect is very vague for the price. You get a PDF script of what to say and an audio track of Joe and another guy having a conversation about the effect but no real how to. I guess I felt there was more lead in to the effect than what was shown. I guess I will just have to give it a go and see what happens. Once again I appreciate the advice and if you have any more input on where to start in hypnosis it would be greatly appreciated

Using the search function for this forum specifically will give you much input on this and how to get started properly.

I would strongly recommend 'Reality is Plastic' by Anthony Jacquin.
It is more direct than any conversational approach and is perhaps the most popular entry point for a lot of newcomers to hypnosis. |

Hi Travis,
Do you have specific questions on technique? Do you have specific points you are struggling with? If you are going to be doing this impromptu I suggest putting a routine together that has a specific flow and working with 3 or more people at once to start. It is much easier to get reactions that way and it builds confidence. The number one thing is to be confident. When I perform impromptu hypnosis I currently go in with a routine of- Magnetic fingers-> magnetic hands-> Laughter skit. I do this all without actual hypnosis. Keep in mind that performing impromptu is a lot different that doing an actual stage hypnosis performance. All the best Jesse

I am not aware of 'mind eraser'
Can anyone tell me if it is similar to 'Cerebral Steal' by James Brown ? |

Talking with ah guy who is a member of my local SAM group who does hypnosis he told me to use my strengths to lead into hypnosis. Find a very powerful effect to get peoples attention and prepare them for hypnosis. I use an effect called "Imagination Coins". It is very powerful to make a person believe something they had just physically done was not actually done but they only imagined it. I start out asking if they have ever had a dream they thought was so real they wake up from it not sure where they are so disoriented they feel they are still in the dream. I then do the routine. After the routine is over I explain imagination is nothing more than your mind having power over your body and then lead into a couple suggestibility tests and that is where I stop. I have not led into any actual hypnosis. The main one I want to lead into is any amnesia effects. That is my first goal and then I will continue to grow form there.

Thanks, They are quite similar.
Cerebral Steal has some magician's 'outs' that can be used if the memory is not erased and in my opinion a better ending when the second phase works. Whether these sorts of effects are 'true hypnosis' (and the whole magician vs real hypnotist issue) have been covered in great depth in other threads. |

Yes I know the magician vs hypnotist argument all to well that that is not what I was looking to get into lol. I will look into Cerebral Steal. I assume the method is basically the same just the routine and wording allows outs (assumption without looking at the routine) I will look into it now..appreciate the input Gordon

You are looking for a magic trick that looks like hypnosis. Searching in the hypnosis section is pointless.

Danny I appreciate the input but read all the discussion before you reply. I am just getting into hypnosis and looking to start out using my strengths in magic to get a feel for the interaction and some of the basics with the interaction.

Maybe it would be a good start to understand exactly how much that will HURT you? Plus a smarmy comment about reading the whole thing doesn't exactly help your case either.
Fact is the performance of magic, and the performance of hypnosis are diametrically different. MANY if not MOST magicians fail at hypnosis for a lack of understanding of this concept. Now your first post is about using it in a strolling setting. Not ever going to work on ANY level with any regularity unless you use tricks that you dress up and lie about as hypnosis. Which is cool, completely valid and nothing wrong with it no problem. This is not the place for fake hypnosis.

I thin both Cerebral Steal and Mind Eraser are great effects and in terms of the nuts and bolts that make them up simple.
However I think you will have much more success pulling them off without 'outs' if you get some more regular hypnotic experience under your belt first. You will then better understand how to use suggestion and keep the results of it stable.
