Ok here is what I am looking at. My Aunt came over about a week ago and asked my grandmother (Because I was out) if I wanted to do a kids show for about 3-5 year olds. It will be for my cousins birthday and I want a little audience perticapationn. I have already done extensive searching on the subject and haven't found much. Merlinuk gave some good advice and I have got so great affects so far and am stringing a routine together. Oh and for thos people who say why did you take a job before you were ready. Here is my responseI did not even say yes. I haven't even told here I was getting anything ready. I have till July so I have plenty of time to get stuff together. so that's about six months of stuff. I just recently perchased 9" Silk Red
1 The Fantasio Appearing Cane Black 1 Magic Coloring Book 1 The Linking Rings 1 Vanishing Crayons 1 9" Silk Blue My brother also said that he was buying the vanishing caine so I was hoping on barowing that.If You have any helpful hints or advice I would apriciate it. I also am going to have at least 3 adults watching the kids so they don't rush up to me (especially my cousin he really likes me ). I will also be posting this at the Penguinmagic magic also. I have some other Ideas I will post later but this I believe is a good idea for everyone right now. |

This is obviously a freebie for your family and doesn't even come close to taking a paying job your not prepared for, I'm glad that both yours and Evans lines in your posts show the message is getting through and people are starting to think before they act. A 3-5 year old magic show should always be fun, the tricks you chose should be colourful, easy to follow, possibly with a story line using helpers and silly wands etc. The 3 year olds may not fully understand or even participate don't try and pick them to help. If you do and the first one shakes their head, the rest will follow their lead. Aim the show at the 4-5 year olds and the 3 year olds will sit and watch it. The Appearing cane is a good thing to use in maybe your opener when they test the magic word works, it's very visual and it's appearance will suprize them. You could show the Blue Silk and get it to change into the Cane. The Vanishing Crayons and colouring book can be combined into a realy good 10 - 15 minute kids routine. The Crayons vanish to become the colours on the picture. Linking rings is OK but it's not what I'd call a good fun kids trick. I wouldn't use them myself. If your budget is tight rather than pay out loads of dosh on expensive tricks make your own, it's amazing how good a bit of card and some sticky holygrapgic paper can look. A cheap to make and easy to do trick with a very funny routine is Tony Griffiths Ribbon of Fun. All you need is some coloured ribbon A yard of yellow and 10 yards of a contrasting colour say blue, and a change bag or some way of vanishing the long ribbon. Basically you show a short yellow ribbon, and a short Blue ribbon, you put the end of the yellow in your pocket leaving most of it hanging out, and the end of the blue ribbon in a small bag leaving the end hanging out. (I used to put it down their back untill it became fashionable not to have your shirt tucked it) you tell the kids that when they shout the magic word the end of the blue ribbon will leap across and tie itself to the end of the yellow, it doesn't work, you get a helper, They hold the bag with the blue ribbon hanging out. It doesn't work again, only this time you pull the blue one out as you talk and it's grown very long. I blame the helper ffor wearing the wrong coloured socks and The helper is told they have to make it short again so we can do the trick properly with a helper with the right colour socks on. (this is of cousre done in a way that does not upset or demean the helper)so the very long blue ribbon is put in a change bag, it disappears and when you pull the yellow one out your pocket the short blue ribbon is tied to the end, the helper of course gets all the credit and applause for being so clever. It uses a helper and is very visual. If you wish I'll E-mail you the full details. You could also make yourself a set of organ pipes and use it to produce your 9" silk or something else. Once again, very visual, easy to and make and it's easy for the kids to follow and can be made into a fun routine.
Yours Funfully

MIL,
You might want to take a look at Sammy Smith's book, Patter for Little Feats. Sammy has made a career out of performing for pre-schoolers and his stuff is pure gold. You seem to have the right selection; my only suggestion might be that your linking rings not go on too long. Other than that, good luck! cheers, Peter Marucci showtimecol@aol.com |

Excellent advice. Emazdad and Peter are on target. The linking rings would not be very good for this age group.
Productions work well, Temple Screen, (Easy to make variation), Rabbit in a hat puppet, breakaway wand, change bag with a zipper, 20th century silks, (July) Patriotic Ropes (Rainbow ropes). Miser's Dream would work well, and in this months (Jan 2004) Linking Rring has Peter's routine, and there are routines on the Café. Coins through the glass (Plastic glass & blue silk and coin) A puppet that wispers (for those who can't do vent work) is great for this age.

My opinion, if you have a regular act. Do it! I did a pre-school once. For kids I do my act, plus Fradie Cat Rabbit, Elusive Clock (Dye Box), etc.
A year later the teacher called and wanted another show, she told me the kids were still talking about the professor's Nitemare, and comedy cut & restored rope. I think kids are smarter than you think we adults think. Bill |

I also agree with Clive in that people are learning how important it is to do your homework before booking a paid performance. That is nice to see.
You also will want to direct attention mainly at the older children. The younger ones may be too frightened or scared to want to come up and help you. Sammy Smith's books and videos would indeed be perfect for you. He has a lot of material for the younger age range and has been performing for those crowds for a long time. Some of his stuff might work perfect for this show. I will also agree that I would leave the linking rings out of this show set up. I think they are a bit ore advanced of an effect for the children to really understand and appreciate. Kyle

Dear everyone,
Thank you for the addvice. I also want to mention that They said that my cousins and there cousins might come like last year so I don't know how old it might get. (I just found out)I got a routine I am hoping to do for the most part so I am going to buy some nive effects and see what happens. I know Tha I am going to incorparate the coloring book with the disapearing crayons. Like I will have a magicians stand and have a black crayon. I will make it disapear. Then I will say I wonder where the color went and have someone gues all this could get 5 min. Then show that color is on the coloring book. Min. of shock then make the crayons disapear. show color in book. Thank you for the help so far I will also look into sammy smith DVD/Book. I also wanted to say if I find that I am doing well in the routine before I go to the party I will make up flyers to put in the kids goodie bags. Thank you all any more sugjestions woul be helpful. Thank You again. |

Linking Rings is a blank canvas effect. Alone it is dull and uninteresting. It is predictable and looks like your showing off.
HOWEVER, bring in some funny patter, a few extra props (try linking a hack saw on to one of the rings) and bring in some conflict ( they keep linking by them selves) and it is pure magic for ANY AGE! |

The advice given above is all very sound. I would only emphasize that 3-5 year olds don't have a real solid psychological ability to appreciate magic.
If you're going to incorporate magic, a story to go along, with alot of silliness and fun, is what is necessary. As Sammy Smith says...the journey should be more fun than getting there. That's when the little guys really like magic! Steven

Hi,
Linking rings is probably the ONLY effect I would personaly use from those above! "Linking Rings is a blank canvas effect. Alone it is dull and uninteresting. It is predictable and looks like your showing off. OK, OK, OK Phillip & Nicholas!
You are absolutely right about the comedy effect that can be done with the linking rings. When I wrote my post above, I was thinking abou how easy these rings could be linked to a comedy effect with kids, however, one starting out might not be able to pull it off. It is an effect after one gains experience with the classics, learns about audience reaction and can anticipate what will happen next. Then the Linking ring (AKA Comedy Style) will work.

I agree with the others. Keep the routines fast-moving and fun!!! I have incorporated juggling at times and found that dropping balls was received better by that crowd than flahy juggling. Have fun with your show and with them and you should do fine. I use Chico the Chimp a lot with that age and they love it.
