I feel a lot of Tenyo fanatics would be interested in the work of Jerry Andrus.
I am sure we are all familiar with the most famous of Jerry Andrus's amazing optical illusions. But today I came across one I hadn't seen before. I thought it would be fun to share it here because it felt like something that Lubor Fiedler would come up with (my highest form of praise!) Check out 'Ghost Grates' here: http://youtu.be/0tdHllPQr8o?t=4m50s And then check out the weird secret here: http://youtu.be/0tdHllPQr8o?t=33m29s This feels like something Lubor Fiedler would have in his workshop. I would love to experience this illusion myself one day. Luckily - it looks like it shouldn't be too hard to put together. Any other fans of Jerry here? Cheers! Joe Mckay |

Lots of Jerry Andrus fans. I had the pleasure of seeing Jerry do Ghost Grates at a party at Scot Morris's apartment on the upper west side of Manhattan many years ago. I even have the lecture notes he delivered on the subject at some hoity-toity university--might have been Harvard.

Richard? With that illusion - do you know what the point of inserting the metal stick is - and turning it around in circles? I am having trouble visualising what effect that produces in the mind of the viewer? Maybe it is similar to Lubor Fiedler's 'Blue Crystal' in which a solid surface suddenly appears to melt to become permeable?
Also - here is a video of Jerry Andrus showing 'Ghost Grates' to Richard Dawkins! http://vimeo.com/70955249 When I was searching for info on Jerry Andrus last night - I found a reference to the notes that Richard Kaufman mentions. 'Ghost Grates & Other Negative Realities For Harvard Seminar April 1986 GBC bound 7 pages of illustrations' Anyway - if you feel like selling your notes (or photocopies of them - which should be okay since they are not a commercial product?) - then name your price and I will happily buy them off you. As with Lubor Fiedler - I have a compulsion to collect any information about the weirder and more offbeat fringes of magic. Cheers! Joe PS Going back to my original post. I recommend checking out the whole video. In the lecture - Andrus demonstrates about a dozen different optical illusions. And many of them were new to me - despite having followed Andrus' work over the years. Watch the whole lecture here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0tdHllPQr8o Also - Andrus describes an unusual sounding optical illusion involving a slinky and a mirror. I don't have a slinky in my house - but if any of you guys do - is there any chance you could try out the illusion and report back what happens? Cheers! You can see a descripton of the slinky/mirror illusion here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0tdHllPQr......t=18m47s |

I can't copy the notes for you: they're copyrighted. Not interested in selling at the time, either. Sorry.
Jerry was a good friend and I treasure the library of his works which reside in my library. |

No probs!
Do you know anymore about what weird effect is produced when you put the metal stick into the frame and turn it around in a big circle? |

Can't remember.
