Alright everyone I have a new lottery based effect that every magician I have told about seems to love. I have written up the manuscript and when it's published I think the price will be around $20-$25. The cost of materials you need to make the effect are going to be around $35.

It does have some Arts and Crafts that aren't particularly hard but it is time consuming.

My question is would you rather purchase a manuscript with all the details about how to make an effect ? Or would you rather have a ready made effect at a considerably higher price? The price of the pre-made package would be no less than $100.

This is something that can't be manufactured I would have to hand make each one. It is a relatively simple process but does take up some time and effort.

My question is which would you prefer or should I do both?

I personally like building things and have no problem following instructions. I guess it depends on what it is that you are making here. As you stated, it's simple but I know some just don't have the time or patience to do such things. Maybe offer both?

How about doing a test run and trying it both ways. Once the prices are set, you can see which one sells better.

The simple answer to this is I don't know. Without knowing the actual effect I honestly couldn't say whether I'd find it worth the effort to make the effect, or worth the extra price to have it ready made.

Here is an answer from someone who has sold a couple of things in the past. It drove me nuts to make the gimmicks for a levitation years ago. It over powered me and the more that I made, the more I didn't want to. Then another project that I did was the same way. It was really work to make my part of a gimmick and then mail it off to have the other part made.

The bottom line that I have learn is a simple one. The less that you have to do the better. I would just sell the booklet/PDF on how to make it and leave it at that. Sell the PDF and include a statement about how for a few bucks more, they can order the gimmick straight from you. This way you make the sells from the book/PDF and ONlY make gimmicks for those who wants to pay you more money.

You are welcome,

If you want people to perform it, sell the kit. If you don't want the schoolchildren posting their performances on YouTube, sell them the DIY instructions.

I like Ray's idea sell the PDF then make the gaffs to order that way you only invest the time and money in the ones you will sell.

Sell the kit. If it gets a good response and makes sense make the gimmicks.

Another vote for the DIY approach...you can always sell the gimmicks premade if and when you want.

Thanks for all of your input. I had already been leading to just selling the manuscript. But I have read so many people here on the Café and other forums who just hate having to make the props, gimmicks, etc. I was concerned and thought okay I will make it for them but I am going to charge them for my valuable time.

I think I will do what most of you suggest and just start with selling the manuscript and allowing those who have purchased it, if they want me to custom make it for them. I can do so for a specific cost. This will be considerably less than just making them outright.

Thanks again everyone and please stay tuned for this release. I may offer a couple up for free to review and look for errors and crediting. I have been performing for 20 plus years but this is my first endeavor on actually releasing one of my pet routines. I want to take my time with it and make sure everything is right before it's release.

Best,

Gordon

If the diff in price is from $25 to $100 I would like the option of paying the $25 and seeing if it's something I will use then going ahead and paying the $100

Perhaps offer the pdf for $25 then offer a "trade-up" by paying the additional $75 for the props.

I'd vote for the full package.
My reasons for that would be:
- I am lazy
- I have bought several scripts where I couldn't find the right materials in my country (of course I could do more research or buy stuff over the net - but as I already said I'm lazy Smile )

I would much rather have the cheaper DIY version

DIY- In my case for the simple reason that I rarely use anything that I can't make and/or fix myself. And the act of making something yourself has always been, for me, a stimulus to creativity.

OP, letting the spectator build for themselves is a good way to go for the following reasons:

1) Smaller price tag.
2) Availability i.e. Wider reach.
3) Longer shelf life.

Do not create gimmicks as long as they can be made at home. Include an estimated price of building the gimmick, in the description.
