'If I told you that you were standing above a treasure chest full of gold, silver and jewels - would you get a shovel and start digging?'
So begins 'Train Tracking', the latest release from Atlas Brookings and perhaps the most eagerly awaited mentalism release of the year. The book (limited to 200 copies) is beautifully designed. A handsome red hardback with gold-embossed lettering, it almost demands to be handled like a precious object, but after all the hype could the contents possibly live up to the heightened expectations? Advance publicity suggested Train Tracking was going to allow a participant to think of ANY word, of ANY length, without ANY restrictions and the performer would be able to reveal that word. No forces. No DR. No IS. No billets. No CT. No PA's. The word would never be written down in any shape or form. Not only could the performer reveal the word, he could reveal a series of images and ideas the participant also thought of along the way. It could be performed on stage or close up. Mark Eldson was quoted as saying, "It's like he's walking around inside your head." It sounded as close to the real thing as possible. The words 'holy grail' were mentioned. Well, the book has finally been released to the lucky few. Atlas has chosen to write up the effect as an account of its development. Not only does this allow you to take the necessary baby steps to become acquainted with the working of the technique, it makes for an exciting narrative. It feels as if you are reading the recently discovered journal of a victorian inventor, recounting the maddening journey of discovery towards a mind-blowing, and previously undiscovered truth. If I didn't know that Atlas is alive and well, I wouldn't have been surprised to discover that the author had been driven insane and had disappeared, never to be found. It's actually a little disappointing he hasn't-it would have been a fitting climax to his quest! Atlas does a great job of guiding you along the way, but there is no point in pretending. This is difficult stuff. The series of diagrams are actually clarity itself once you read the chapters, but on first glimpse they are almost frighteningly complex. Some will see this as a good thing. If this technique ever did slip out to a wider audience, very few would be brave, or insane enough to try and take on the challenge you are provided with. At this early stage it looks and feels like the most daunting challenge I've faced in 30 years of studying mentalism. Many will be familiar with the various techniques used within the effect (all properly credited and acknowledged), but they are taken to a new level here-some would say they are taken to their logical conclusion. I suspect many of us had the vague inkling that this was possible but then, when considering the logistics, abandoned the idea as impossibly complex. Well, Atlas has taken on the challenge and succeeded spectacularly. The success rate is never going to be 100%, but the routine is structured in such a way that you can never totally fail. There are some additional thoughts in the book for applying the core technique to other routines and as an out if the performer gets into difficulties elsewhere. These are somewhat vague and doubtless will be greatly expanded upon in the user's forum currently being established. I haven't seen the effect performed but people who have tell me it is extraordinary. I'm not sure if anyone else in the world can actually perform Train Tracking at the level Atlas performs it. It will be interesting to see how many there are a year from now. But those who do will indeed be performing something close to a "holy grail" for those of us interested in pure, prop less close-up mentalism. |

So, if I understand correctly, let's say I am the spectator... I think of any word, and then the mentalist is able to find it with no fishing, etc. ?
Seems unreal.

Martin while you and I have never had direct interaction based on your posts I do respect your opinion and thinking. I did have an interest in this project prior to you sharing your thoughts, I admit this has somehow increased my interest level.
The issue for me now is I can't afford the freaking book.

It is not a sum of money I would normally spend on a single item (I think my record - taking into account inflation- remains the 150 quid or so I spent on Informatico Principle many, many moons ago), but knowing Atlas' previous work, I thought it worth the risk. If I can get to grips with the technique, it will have been worth the investment. |

I think that is where this lies. I believe Atlas put some incredible thinking behind this. I am waiting for my copy to arrive and am anxious to begin the process. RNK

I think we can all agree that 'fishing' is certainly inappropriate on this thread!

Here's a SIMPLE SOLUTION. If you bought the book, don't answer any questions or talk about it. If there are any questions from anyone looking to purchase it, refer them to Atlas. Man, what's so hard about doing that? ANYTHING that you say is a little piece of the puzzle don't forget.

I'm not convinced there is much point saying this as I suspect all if not almost all of these are sold. However, inhabe just started reading this and it really is as incredible as it sounds. Its going to take some work but that is part of the appeal for me. Lets say 200 people own this amd hypothetically another 20 know the secret. I'll be astounded if more than 50% of those people will actually learn this. Meaning I have something only a handful of people can do. That really motivates me.
The book is well written, beautiful in appearance and really very engaging. I doubt anyone who buys it will be dissapoimted as long as they don't expect to perform this tomorrow. The idea is genius. |

Dmoses, I know you hinted at this earlier on. Please don't go pointing to any particular effects at this stage of the game. A lot of us paid a lot of money for this. If there's an issue please take it up with Atlas.
