As Danny says "Semantics". I don't think anyone on either side of the argument believes in a supernatural trance state. For me the meaning of the word is the current configuration of subjective reality. And that changes from moment to moment. Again for my definition of the word hypnosis is the process of directing those mental processes to change subjective reality which in turn changes behaviour and the results someone gets.
But that's me and its a really useful way to look at it when you use it the way I do. I keep well away from science and academia they offer very little value on a practical level. |

You know if Penn and Teller were anything other than Magicians, I'd be bothered.
They aren't so I'm not. |

I take my words back.
Penn: In the hypnotism episode we wanted to say all Hypnosis is BS but that is simply not true so we had to weasel around it. source: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=57r5xEsvftM

~I just found it too boring to wait to hear it. They are both so up their own back sides that I find it a bit ironic they make a living calling BS.... They are among the biggest I have seen.

Penn and Teller's shows are great to watch, and I notice that they like to "debunk" the common myths and old wives' tales that we usually hear about magic and mentalism. I do agree with Ibi that hypnotism does have therapeutic uses (among others) as well and just for this reason alone it should not be discarded as BS.

I'm fairly new to hypnosis but have studied quite a bit in my brief experience. While this is slightly off topic, I find the Automatic Imagination Model of Anthony Jacquin and Kev Sheldrake very intriguing and intuitive.

By this argument put forward, LOVE doesn't exist.
Or HATE for that matter. Or any other feeling.

People aren't typically good enough actors to pretend to demonstrate the phenomenon of hypnosis. You can tell when someone is faking. Subjects will also exhibit physical signs that cannot be faked (ex. rapid eye movement).

I think if a person does NOT believe that hypnosis exists they quite simply have not experienced enough. When they have... They do. There are a million arguments but why wouldn't a quite nasty guy, on state benefits NOT kick me in the balls last night when I offered him £500 to do so in a pub in Arbroath? I say because he was hypnotised. The whole pub seemed to agree with me, including the guy. Why would anyone have a desire even to argue with that?

On state benefits? What does that have to do with anything?

I was wondering that too. Maybe it's a riddle. Maybe it was a disability benefit and that's the real reason why he wouldn't/couldn't kick.

Research has now shown that antidepressants are no more effective than the placebo effect. People "feel a little better" yet it doesn't actually solve their emotional problem in most cases where hypnosis and related techniques can. You could also say Placebo is a hypnotic effect. Its a way to deliver a suggestion that bypasses the critical faculty. |
