I was watching Mystery Diner just a second ago and they had one episode where a chef at a restaurant sold the owners recipe to a diner. The chef was fired by the owner after it was all caught on videotape. It made me think back to the gigs I was booked for. I can't count how many times people have offerred me money for secrets to magic tricks (which I have of course turned them down). I know there were several times where people would offer a $100 for the secrets to some of the small close up tricks I have performed (which I turned them down as well). Watching that episode of Mystery Diner made me realize why keeping secrets is important. Part of the value of the owners diner was her food's recipes just as part of the value of a magician is the secrets to his magic tricks.

I can only recall once being offered money: The fellow thought that I was using a trick deck and he wanted to buy it.
If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.

I've been offered money for secrets to tricks that either only require a regular deck of cards to a glass coke bottle with a bottle cap that you can easily buy in a grocery store to other tricks that require simple every day common objects. Most of the time, people just want to know the secret to the trick but aren't willing to put in the hard work and practice and experience it takes to perform a trick masterfully.

What you described (chef sold the owner's recipe and was fired) did not happen ((the chef was actually innocent and he was not fired - someone else was) so I guess that was not the episode, unless you just messed up your description. The episode I watched was interesting though. They ran a sting and they tested the honesty of 2 of about 20 people who knew the secret recipe. One of the 2 took the bait and was busted. But none of the others were tested, so it may be that the actual culprit they were trying to find (the one who sold the recipe to the food truck) was never found out. Made for good television, though, I guess.

It was a different episode. Can't remember the name of the owner's restaurant. It was a woman who owned the restaurant and it was her recipe. It looked like a healthy eating joint she owns. It certainly wasn't a Bar B Que joint. I tell you one recipe I would love to have and that is Wild Wings Café atomic hot sauce and how they cook their wings. I love that place and their wings! One of my customers that booked me had a 50th birthday party celebration at Wild Wings Café and bought me a meal at the joint. It was awesome! Love some good hot wings!

It's like juggling (which I can't do). I can sell you the secret for $100 since all you have to do is keep the balls cascading, but unless you have the skill and coordination that little tidbit won't do you jack.

I had a nice conversation with Joe Leffler before he passed away awhile back and when purchasing one of his famous suitcase tables. He knew he was dying. We talked about the magic business in general and he told me, in no uncertain terms, that there were more hoes in the magic business than in hoehouses.
It's like the old joke about the guy in the bar who propositions a barfly. She's interested and he says, so how about fifty bucks for a spin? Getting his gist, she says, "What kind of person do you think I am!" He says, "We've already established that, all I'm trying to do is establish a price." Folks on both sides of the fence have no scruples. Period. Just don't be one of them.
What if the Hokey Pokey really IS what it's all about?
My neighbor rang my doorbell at 2:30 a.m. this morning, can you believe that, 2:30 a.m.!? Lucky for him I was still up playing my drums. |

I was surprised the guy did it, but then again I surprised that the owner was charging the wait/kitchen staff for honest mistakes made in placing or preparing orders, even when it was purely the customers fault. They said at the end of the episode that the owner changed her policy of deducting the price of screwed up orders from the staff, which may not even be legal. That will probably go a long way in helping her problem of the staff selling her recipes. |

Did you see the episode with the magician?
Pseudo reality television just bugs me. You make a fine point about secrets. But shouldn't we be more than the sum of our secrets? Is it secrets that makes us entertaining? Personally I do not put as much stock in that. Often hiding in plain sight works better. Yes we need secrets. Yes by definition we shouldn't tell them. But I think they are a small portion of who we should be.
