Why are there no reviews of any of the Penguin Lectures in here lately. People used to post reviews, but not any more?

I guess because Penguin lecture reviews are prominently on the Penguin Magic website and if people want feedback on the event, they go to Penguin's page for the lecture. Maybe we should start that trend again!?!

I agree that the discussions on the lectures here was useful. The Penguin page, while helpful, isn't conducive to any kind of discussion.
Maybe if people started threads on each of the lectures here again..? |

Penguin lecture threads seemed to start vanishing from the Café around the time the ad in this forum changed from Penguin to Murphy's Magic.
My favorite lecture from the past few months was Dani DaOrtiz (his 2nd lecture for Penguin). It was stupendous. |

My favourites have been:
Ian Rowland Jim Sisti Docc Hilford Devin Knight Bob Cassidy Jay Scott Berry Paul Gertner Mark Elsdon I've taken and used a trick, bit of business or approach from each. If I was forced to choose my favourite of favourites it would be the lecture by Bob Cassidy. Held me spellbound from beginning to end. This subcription is the best value in magic.

I've got to admit you have excellent taste, Jamie.
Am doing another one on September 14th with Richard Osterlind. It is rumored that this one will be a mentalism death match. |

I personally stopped writing comments or reviews about em since there are so many people in Café who's only job seems to be disagree and whine on other people's opinions... Especially if you didn't like something and wrote why there always seems to be 2-4 people wanting to start a lynch mob cos you just wrote bad review about their personal hero. Funny thing is that in most cases it is extremely obvious that those people havent even seen the product in question but they still feel that they know the content.
That said, Penguin lectures are still the best deal in magic at the moment. Watched few of the Murphy's ones, but they are coming decade behind of what Penguin is doing. However Murphy's ones are also getting better but they have a lot of work ahead of em if they want to get to where penguin is at the moment. Juha-Matti |

The next technological evolution these online lectures need is someone in the back with a boom mic who can just swing it over the head of anyone who has a question or interjection. This thing where it's "Well, we'll just repeat the question because people can't here you," is wildly inefficient. Especially when someone gets into a conversation with the performer.

The best of the more recent lectures was hands down Axel Hecklau for me.

Agree re Axel. Also, the Café needs to start a section for the penguin lectures. Not sure why that hasn't happened yet. Would be great to promote more discussion about them.

Dan Sperry's lecture was filled with insightful theory on magic, one of the best this year IMHO

I can understand the Café's reluctance to establish a forum for a particular vendor's products, but now that there are multiple sources of online lectures, a forum called The Lecture Hall (or similar) would be really useful, and likely well-trafficked.
Actually a dedicated forum for real-world lectures would be extremely useful too. I'd love to see a prominent place for lecturers to post their tour schedules, and for lecture venues to post their upcoming lecturers. |

Even the big multi-part reviews of the IBM/SAM convention from Craig Mitchell got posted in a different forum. It also has a dumb name, which may further discourage usage. I think lecturers, venues and attendees would all benefit from a focused place to announce lectures. |
