Really?! http://cwpittsburgh.cbslocal.com/2014/08......in-half/ Am I nuts or is anyone else tee'd-off at this? |

There's no respect for magic. Too many losers exposing magic so readily and openly to anyone willing to watch. This craft has become the bottom of the barrel. Now, I remember why I stopped performing magic. If the ones at the top don't care, why should you?

I know I haven't seen him perform live in nearly thirty years and I don't recall seeing him perform the old (I think it was Dante who first did this) switched heads bit on any of his TV shows. So there is a chance that P&T have never seen this old gag performed before.

When P&T said they never seen it before I thought the same thing. Here is a link to the Copperfield TV special. In his early TV specials he used Webster a lot.

Why on earth people think P&T should know every bit of magic there is? that's impossible.
The problem so many magicians have these days is that they just don't any magic history past Copperfield, as if nothing in magic existed before him.

Why should they. It was a trick David Copperfield performed 26 years ago. How many different effects has he done since then. Why do Penn and teller need a working knowledge if all magic tricks?

Well, Sackninja! (and others concerned above) I shared a suite in the Waldorf Astoria, with Penn & Teller at the SAM in NYC in "74. I think I know them fairly well, after four days and nights talking "magic"!
Just because they "said": "We've never seen" something, doesn't mean they havn't seen it. It's a PERFORMANCE! Magicians "lie" for a living!!! "P&T" have probably "seen" more tricks performed, than you can even begin to imagine! I'm not defending their exposures of the TT,(etc.) but more magic methods have been, and, are exposed by poor performance, by an UNpracticed performer, than the Camel Cigarette ads ever did. For new magicians: Camel Cigarettes sponsored a series of exposes in the Comics Section of the Sunday papers,in the early '30s. The Camel ads exposed "all" of the major illusions being done by Thurston, Blackstone, ETC. Howard & Harry did not pack up their props, and head back to the barn! Thurston performed until he died in '36, and Harry stayed on the road, until his health forced him to quit in 1950. The current "Penn & Teller Fool Us" is IMHO, just another case of EXPLOITATION.

There were a few commercially sold effects and effects from Books that Penn & Teller said they didn't know. Spreadweave, an effect from Aaronson I think. Perhaps they aren't magic junkies like most of us, rather they are busy designing their own effects.
Not sure why you would be upset with there sawing in half, the routine pretty much "kills" the exposure.

I agree with TheRaven. It's scripted to provide the most entertainment. Relax, everyone. Bending reality visually--and verbally--is the very basis of the art. Since when could we ever believe Penn and Teller, or any magician, for that matter? The "contest" nature of the show is part of the illusion.

The "Buzz-Saw" exposure---wasn't a real exposure. Yes, they showed the "wedge table base"...but then flipped the layman's world upside-down by "accidentally" having the saw cut into the assistant's legs---and splattering blood & guts everywhere (ala Richiardi, Jr.).
To a laymen, I think the whole thing came off as a "ha, ha - the jokes on you" (referring to the TV audience)...leaving laymen to dismiss anything that P&T might have shown them about the inner workings. Newsflash: Lay audiences rarely give a **** , nor do they remember magic exposures anyway. |

I've seen them do this before, and it is one of my favorite bits that they perform! Richiardi, Jr. would be proud! I'm not tee'd-off, so you must be nuts. (you only gave me those two choices) |

And bear in mind that this P&T series was made four years ago in the UK ... And the acts were invited to perform certain routines on the programmes. Lots if things were "staged" for the audience which was mainly British magicians, not the general public.
