I am reinventing the ash trick where you reveal a prediction or name on your skin with ash. However the place I am doing the show does not allow fire. Is there a clean way to do a switch from the paper the spectator writes on to ash in the hands? I have a couple ideas but keeping it clean with ash not leaving a trail from where I pulled it is a concern. Let me know if anyone has any ideas and preferably not a thumb tip

Maybe use an ancient looking urn with the ashes of a long departed relative who was a mentalist in his/her day. Explain that clairvoyance and psychic powers of prediction tend to run within a bloodline and that you have a deep connection to this relative - There presence (so powerful even in the ash form) helps enhance your abilities - The story will establish the connection to you and when the prediction appears on your arm it will make sense to the audience - your veins (blood lines) run close to the skin of your forearm - Place the paper in the urn and after a moment deposit some ashes onto your hand from the urn and reveal the prediction - or if doing a tarot card prediction simply leave out the paper and just place the urn on top of the deck of cards and then use the ashes from the urn for the prediction. Lots of possibilities here. Have fun!

Maybe just have the spec hold the urn for a few seconds to establish a connection and then use the ashes to reveal the name/prediction?

Excellent idea. I will explore this idea to fit my story line I already have built for the entire show. My original idea is a switch all done in the hands almost like a false pass done in coin magic. Maybe I could do it dove pan style to reveal the paper 100% gone and show only ash. I also have the utility pure smoke that could am an extra effect of smoke if I hold my hands above the pan (urn) to give a reason for it turn to ash

Just to give you an idea of how the effect will be performed. I am going to do the reveal of the ash on my face. I will put ash in both palm bring my hands up to my eyes and cover my eyes...slowly drag down my face and on my cheek bones will be the reveal.
Follow up question I have always used R*bb** Ce***t. Do you guys use anything that may be less visible once dry on the skin? It also must be reliable for leaving it on my skin for up to 30 min before the reveal is done. It will be the closer to my 20min set at a small cocktail lounge style setting |

This being spooky I would recommend that you experiment with Sp1r1t Gum - it is a light adhesive used for special effect prosthetics - you can order it online and it wont come off when you sweat but I'm not sure if it remains tacky enough to adhere to ash.

I actually have some I will see what I can do... If anything when I wipe my hands down maybe it will roll the spirit gum and fill with ash and almost look like burn scars great idea I will play with that also

I hope it's not your intent to kill the pacing by standing there wiping it off, especially since you will be using some sort of material that will be tacky and stuck to your face. |

That's a good point Al - the reveal on your arm works well because you can roll up your sleeves then roll than down again after and it seems perfectly natural

It will be my closer so I will end the show with it and when I walk of stage go clean it off

I think LoPan has made some excellent suggestions.
As to the vanishment of the paper sans any burning. I would reccommend the spectator be allowed to tear it up and drop it into the urn. Once inside and the lid replaced, a slight shake to mix the contents.. Out of sight in a place no one will wish to attempt retrieving them. Kotah |

Just as a side note , not that the average spectator would now;
But creamatory ash is quite different from what you might imagine. It more resembles a mix of cat litter, fine cigar ash and a smattering of bone / tooth chips. That is what the contents of your urn would look like if it contained human ash. Kotah |

I will use a dove pan and simbilize it as an urn put the paper in the pan and tell a story of how the urn was passed through the generations with a story of witchcraft and voodoo. Explain when I received it, it didn't not have ashes in it. I will place the paper inside and put the lid on. Have the spectator hold it and place my hands on top using pure smoke device I will make it appear as if the pan is on fire inside and smoking. When I lift the lid see a small amount of ash proportioned to the amount of paper and leave a few small pieces of burnt paper inside to show it has mysteriously burnt

Ending your act with something on your face, or anything that can distract from the audience getting that one last look at you when you take your final bow is s terrible idea. That may be the last time they see you, you want to leave them with an image of YOU, the performer. That's why in most live theatre, the actors break character when they come out for their curtain call. It gives the audience a chance to see them "natural," you catch their human side. I don't think using something like this as a closer is a good idea if it is your intention to have your face smeared up with ash and sticky goo. I question how much stagecraft training or experience you have had. Maybe you should think of talking a short theatre 101 sort of class at your local college or community theatre. And don't get the impression I am being mean or snarky. But I know what I am talking about. If I was directing you in developing your act, I would not let you finish with something like your are suggesting. |

Comments appreciated Al, did you have a bad experience with this happening?
Also I understand what you are saying but this is a variety show and it's almost borderlined a freak show I am taking part in a lot of weirdos and tattooed faces. I'm thinking there may be an exception. The entire show I am asked to perform is almost on the spooky/Erie side of magic pushing the edge of voodoo and witchcraft. Typically this not how I would end a show but I feel there could be an exception to this specific request of show. |

If this is a spooky/voodoo show with issues about fire then you might really consider losing the dove pans and go with an urn full of ashes - it would probably play better to the audience - have fun it sounds like quite a night - where will it be held?

Along with the ash trick I have a few others I am considering doing again it is still a ways away. This being my first time doing a spook show I am willing to take all suggestions so for Al especially I will not take offense on the show ideas however I ask you do not insult my intelligence as a performer suggesting I take acting classes. I would not be performing if I did not know what I was doing as well as an entertainer.
Lo Pan. It will be in a small cocktail lounge with an audience if about 40 people real low key and casual. I will also be doing some mentalism, Wayne Houchins single needle is in my list for consideration as well as Neck Saw with the string. I also have a Floating table up for consideration. I only get a 20 min set so whatever I do I will make it all flow together nicely into one solid story |

It's quite easy to peruse the Café and offer up a "That sounds cool! -Go for it!" response or obvious solution to someone's inquiry. It takes a bit of effort for someone to dive into the thread and start asking real questions. For Al to hold his tongue or watch you head down a path that he believes disastrous would be what is truly unkind. Acting lessons could be be a good suggestion for even a seasoned professional and it's a great suggestion for someone who may be doing their first spook show. I'm of the opinion we're lucky to have several people like Al in spooky who care enough to deliver an honest thought. In the interest of my routines being bulletproof, I personally welcome any thought that leads me to the heavy lifting of truly making my performance better. I wish you good luck with your show |

All you would have to do is respond that you believe that you know what your doing. No one on this thread has any idea what your intelligence level is, nor your level of performance ability. That's what we are all here for, to scope those things out and then guide each other. Copping an attitude will only result in folks not caring to engage you in discussions. If you intend to be an entertainer, your going to have to have a thick skin. My comments were mild compared to what one has to put up with if you do this professionally. |
