I posted this in the newbie section but I was told this forum might be a better one to discuss in. I'm brand new to doing magic, though I've enjoyed the occasional show at The Magic Castle and know a couple magicians... I just haven't had a reason to learn tricks myself. Until now. I want to dress up like Elsa, from Disney's Frozen, and I thought it would be more entertaining (for others AND myself) to do some kind of magic tricks. I've been browsing the web and have found things like Insta-snow, tricks involving baking soda and water, levitating objects with string or loops... But I'm having a hard time really figuring out the most interesting "icy magic" tricks I could do out on the sidewalk. Creating ice and snow, making snowflakes (confetti ones?) appear and levitate, are the things I have been trying to figure out. I would be out on a sidewalk and have to have everything I need in a handbag, and I probably also have to be careful of leaving a non-biodegradable mess. Would anyone have any suggestions? I'd really appreciate it! |

It's difficult to get pure white sponge balls for a sponge ball (read snow ball) routine, but you can do the same things with white pom poms from the craft store. There are many DVDs out with simple sponge ball routines you can learn.
The Wizards' Journal #17 (on the Magic Nook) has a trick called Four Card Monte that would be easy to print up using your computer printer and some card stock or photo stock to print on. You could make a set of picture cards based on your character(s) by using on-line clip-art. The plot is that one of the cards first appears, then disappears, and finally is found in some unusual location, like hanging from your back, or in an envelope being held by a spectator, etc. I used to do this with Frosty the Snowman and some top hat cards, but you can be more creative than that, I'm sure.

I'll look into the sponge ball thing. Might be fun to throw snowballs at people. :-P I won't have sleeves to hide anything in though, if that's required! Well, there ARE sleeves but they're transparent.
I don't really want to do card games, I want to do things that the character would do (as best I can). I mean, other than magically creating new clothes and bringing life to snowmen. Though that would be cool too. Hmm. OK, although my sleeves are see-through, might there be a way to trigger "snow" to come out of something in my sleeve, like it's coming out of my hand? |

Dan Garrett used to sell white sponge balls.
The second thing seems obvious but does include clean up. Snow storms. Depending on whether you wanted to get custom you could go regular, Butterfly or perhaps custom mini snow people. Love and prayers

Things like confetti snow will be difficult for someone unused to magic to pull off. So will levitating things. White sponge balls on the other hand will be easy enough - and they don't involve sleeves. If you can't find white sponge balls, use a soft white sponge and cut it into roughly equally sized balls. That will work fine.
Another simple effect that children will love is the thumb tip vanish of a colourful ribbon. That is a sure fire winner. A Silver Scepter wand (dealer item and easy to get) will suit your character, I think. Make sure your costume has pockets. They will help with the sponge balls.

Maybe a torn and restored tissue snowflake.
This could be a napkin with the picture of a snow flake. You can tell its the same one, there are no two snowflakes that are alike. LOL It would take getting a special silk made but perhaps a change bag blendo of colored silks to Northern lights. Perhaps a cut down and hemmed silk streamer would work. Professors Nightmare with patter about the length of days winter to summer (fall and spring are both the same so, one rope to represent both) and variety being a good thing as apposed to all the lengths of days being the same. Take solace in the Solstice it holds the promise of brighter days to come. I haven't seen the movie so sorry if these are not helpful suggestions. -Mary Mowder |

Manicpixie,
Where are you located? The best thing would be to meet with a local magician. They could show you tons of things at one time, and probably recommend a lot of effects. They could also answer any questions you have. Hope that helps, Kevin |

Cut your own white sponge balls. Magicians used to do that all the time with sponges before Goshman. Even if they do not all look absolutely identical, you can patter how no two snow flakes are alike.

Miser's Dream with a plastic snow flake to your hand might be nice and you wouldn't have to explain them melting away at the end, that's what snow flakes do.
It would take some practice but not too much. You'd have to watch your angles on the street. If you search for Miser's Dream Magic on youtube you'll see several examples of the basic effect. Beware of falling into the trap of thinking you could never do anything that requires skill. Even the best Magicians were beginners at one time. There is almost a stereotype of Women and Clowns always asking for Easy to do Magic that does not require practice. (everything requires practice if only the acting and blocking). Starting with easy stuff is fine but gaining skill from the time you are young and presumably beautiful is a good idea. Then when you get older you'll have your skills to fall back on. I started as a young adult myself so you don't have to start as a child to get anywhere. -Mary Mowder |

A lot of it has to do with the style of the venue. Are you doing walkaround meet-&-greet with a bunch of kids? Or are you actually going to busk as Elsa? If so, kudos and good fortune! Here's a thought---get an 'airborne' effect and pout the liquid so the glass floats, then pour the liquid into another glass prepped with slush-powder, and use your powers to 'ice' it. The white sponge balls are a great idea, make sure you get them in all sizes from 1/2' to the jumbo 5".
Everybody wants to beleive.....we just help them along.

Hi! Sorry I didn't check in sooner. I didn't get a notification of responses. :-P
OK I'll look up some of those things and see what they are (like Miser's Dream). Making little snowflakes (perhaps made with that shrinky dink paper I bought for absolutely no reason) appear and disappear would be good. Pockets... well, the costume is coming from China and I don't think it has pockets. I just bought a cheap clear make-up bag at the store today that I want to line with sparkly blue fabric and put a handle on (though I'm still trying to figure out how I'd wear a purse, since the costume has a cape, too, attached beneath the arms... I may find a way to make a little backpack out of it, under the cape. lol. Right now I'm in France, but I'm planning on getting back to Los Angeles in October. I did meet a magician here, through a friend, and I tried to talk to him about it, but maybe his English isn't so good because I don't think he really understood what I was saying. For those of you who haven't seen the movie... this song basically shows everything she can do... but warning... it will really get stuck in your head. http://youtu.be/moSFlvxnbgk Oh yeah, to answer another of your questions, I'll probably stake out a spot on the one block stretch of sidewalk, somewhere noticeable, but once in a while take a walk up and down. Because it can get boring. I did Catwoman a few years ago, so I already have experience. I would have entertained myself with the bullwhip, but I'm pretty sure I would have gotten in trouble for that. I was just thinking that some shooting glitter would look cool. But then I thought about how my home would look like fairies lived there if I messed with glitter every day. |

You should be aware that what you're proposing is copyright infringement. I think if you're busking, you'll probably be OK, but I would ask at the Busking section what folks' opinions are.
There are dozens of party companies hiring out illegal characters, and my suspicion is that Disney would go after those companies sooner than a busker. If your act is successful, it could be frustrating to realise somewhere down the line, that you can't take the act anywhere, because it's illegal. The only way you could take it forward legally, would be to start working for Disney as a licensed character. I would probably consider doing an act which is similar, but not a direct copy. For instance, my character is a pirate. I pre-dated Johnny Depp by a few years, but even so, I would never choose to dress exactly like him. If I did, I'd be infringing copyright, but also, I simply don't want to be a Johnny Depp lookalike (some chance of that anyway!) Still, "Pirates of the Caribbean" helped my show enormously. It was much more fun coming up with an original costume and character. And after 12 years I've just introduced a brand new steampunk pirate costume, which is fab! Yeah, I'd create a similar character, but be unique. Kids will STILL love any character which reminds them of "Frozen". Pretend to be a sister or cousin or friend, etc, of a character from "Frozen". Take it from me, you'll have more fun being yourself, and not trying to be an impersonator......the act will then be a lot easier to develop, as you will have fewer constraints......and you'll have no worries about getting a call from the Disney legal team. |

Well... every character out there is someone recognizable. Superman has been there for decades. Then there's Spider-man, the Hulk, Wonderwoman, Jack Sparrow... anyone you can think of. Some of them even get hired occasionally to do skits on the Jimmy Kimmel show, which films across the street.
I don't really want to take the act somewhere... it's just something to do to earn a little money and get to dress up. I can't even think of anywhere else I COULD take it. There's nowhere in Paris where I could earn tips dressing like a princess. lol Tangent.... does it annoy anyone else that the live Disney princesses (like, at Disneyland) never seem as young or thin as they are in the movies, and they all wear crazy big wigs? I actually have bleached white hair (well it's kind of blue right now) and I'm just going to get extensions... wigs are annoying. Even as a child I was such a stickler for detail in all of my costumes. I even crafted Pocahontas' necklace out of clay... :-D Anyway.... Steampunk pirate, yay! lol. I dressed like a pirate for the PA Renaissance Faire one year, though I knew it was complete fantasy because no woman would ever dress like a sexy pirate. Rather, they'd have to pass as men. But they weren't very historically accurate there, anyway. :-D I'm still going to stick with being Elsa, because if children and adults are as anal as I was/am they'll appreciate the attention to detail I bring to my costumes. Plus, I just spent $200 on a dress. I don't think anybody else on the blvd has had problems with Disney... Jack Sparrow (2 or 3 of them, actually) were there for ages. One moved to Las Vegas and does it there now. I actually really prefer being an "impersonator." I'm an actress, and although I haven't had the chance really, I love the idea of learning about a real person (yeah, yeah, Elsa's not real, not much to learn about) and "becoming" them. It's like looking at a landscape and painting it... vs. trying to come up with one in your mind (which I suck at). Really good impressions well... impress me. Jack Sparrow on the blvd was by far my favourite character just because he put sooo much effort into it and did a really good job. I like Johnny Depp's Jack Sparrow too, so that didn't hurt things. Honestly, the best part about this idea for me is that I finally have an excuse to dress up like a Disney Princess again for more than one day of the year. :-D Darn, I wish I had photos of all my childhood costumes (Ariel, Belle, Esmeralda, Pocahontas... my parents weren't good with the camera). I'll be a hit at the West Hollywood parade, too. :-D |

In addition to be compared to Elsa from the "Frozen" movie, you'll be compared to Elsa from the "Once Upon a Time" TV show. She will be a part of the show as of this fall, as was hinted at in the finale for last season.
"Once Upon a Time" is an ABC / Disney show, that uses a lot of characters from Fairy Tales and Disney Movies. My wife and I saw Elsa and Hook the other day, filming a scene for the show. We were in Steveston, BC, (Canada) on vacation. - Donald

Ha. I haven't heard of that show. I prefer the animated costume to that one though, that one lacks detail.
Actually, that reminded me of something else... someone I know is in visual effects and he wanted to do some sort of short film with the superheroes on the blvd. I think as long as we don't make money off of it, we're fine. He showed me a whole feature film that someone shot AT Disney World, without permits or permission... Disney actually let them go. |

You can get white mouth coils, or silver Mylar coils that fit in a thumb tip. Very easy and visual. You can also try to bleach sponge balls. Also try slush powder to turn water in to snow.
