Well, Sankey has done it again! Done what, you say? Why, what he does best, of course! And what might that be? That might be creating mind blowing magic from the simplest of ideas, that if you are not careful, could make you just a tad bit jealous!
Honestly, if their were a Mozart in the magic world, Sankey just might be the one. No doubt, he is amoung the top contenders for the title. This effect, The Great detective, is as follows: A stickman is drawn on the back of a card, and the ink is allowed to dry, and yet, a moment later, it comes to life and begins visually sliding from card to card throughout the pack. To finish, the stickman travels onto the back of a previously selected card, making for an ideal magical souvenir and proving that "the Great Detective always gets his man!" Allow me to start this review with a confession: I'm a sucker for effects that use stickmen. Perhaps it's just the raw simplicity of the little structures that I find appealing, but for whatever reason, I love stickman tricks. So much so, that I've invented a few of my own, but that's another story. I believe that many people find them eye appealing, so that easily makes any trick involving the little fellas something to consider. In this Sankey offering, we see the little guy displaying his talent as a Private Investigator. He can and will be endowed with whatever personality you care to inject into him, and you won't have a lot of difficulty making him a hit with your audiences. Although the effect is visually appealing, there will be a couple of sleights that you will have to learn, and if you allready have Jay's other tapes, you may be familiar with the sleights, but they are not super common. And for sure, the sleights are not difficult. a few practice sessions, and you should have them going smoothly. What happens in the effect is pretty much covered in the description, that is, you draw a stickman on the back of a card, and he appears to visibly SLIDE from one card to another. The illusion is perfect when done well, and when you think about it, the premise of sliding a drawing from one card to another is quite a little miraculous event. Sort of in the same class as moving holes! The card that is included with the effect allready has a stickman printed on it, but for the routine, you will need to draw a close duplicate stickman on another card, but Sankey has a way of making that easy too. Your artistic abilities will definitely not be stretched to the limit. You can do this, I promise! And I believe with practice, you will also be able to do this workable, practical, commercial routine. I think you will want to add it to your reportoire as a permanent addition. This is the kind of effect where people will ask you to "Do it again!", and the temptation may be strong, because it is a lot of fun to perform, but I suggest you hold it back for times when you feel the need for special astonishment. Astonishment will indeed be your reward for learning this effect, and the stickman's antics will bring a smile to the faces of both kids and adults. As always, Sankeys instructions are well written, enabling you to learn the effect quickly and painlessly. Reset is easy, and you can be ready to perform at a moments notice. One more thing I might mention, ...the stickman that comes printed on the gimmick card looks totally real, that is, you can not tell that it is pre-printed. This routine is "visual, funny, and easy to perform!" I really believe you will love it, and I believe your audiences will feel the same way. For all of those reasons, I am going to give this two thumbs up, and rate it at **** four stars. The effect sells for $11.95 through Hank Lee's, and is on page 181 of his current catalog.

This sounds exactly like an effect from Natural Selections 1 by David Acer. The name eludes me right now, but it is a very good, commercial routine. Have you read up on that one Doug? And if so, what are the similarities/differences?

There is also another version by Richard Sanders. After all they are great friends of each other. I think it would be cool to incorporate all of them together to have different ways of doing it.
There is also a gimmicked version at http://www.jbtv.co.uk and it's called Stickman Sam. I think Sankey's is the same as his other effect called Forgery (done with a sticker) in his Sankey Panky and one of his first videos. Can someone confirm this?

Xander, To tell you the truth, I had not heard of the routine you mentioned. The Acer book is one the few things I don't have in my collection, but since you brought it up, I guess one day will be, soon as I can plop down the bucks. Uhh, you wouldn't by any chance be willing to let me borrow your copy, would you? LOL
Niva, I like your idea about combining them together, have you formulated any clear ideas on how it could possibly be done?

Hey Guys,
Sankey, Sanders, and Acer all decided (as a group) to create stickman effects independant of one another and see what they could come up with. Sanders' routine is very similar to Sankey's, but Sankey's is gimmicked which makes it hard to justify carrying around a gimmick when you could just perform Sanders' routine. Acer went in a different direction with his stickman effect. It only uses a small packet of cards and instead of the stickman traveling from card to card, it duplicates until it's on all the cards. They all have their merits, but I prefer Sanders' routine above the other two. Tyler Wilson |

It also sounds like a version of the Martin Lewis effect "Stampede Seconds" ?

I haven't seen the Saunders version, but I can tell you that I use Acer's version all the time in my professional restaurant work. It uses no gimmicks, the setup is minimal, and it instantly resets. I love this trick. I haven't read his book. I got the instructions out of my Magic Menu: First Five Years book.

Oh! Sankey's is gimmicked?? I always thought his was exactly like forgery. Shame on me.
Then I must conclude that his Forgery is like Sanders' Stick Man trick. I can't remember Sanders' routine exactly, I have to check it again. I like moving holes, drawing and stickers tricks. daffydoug, I haven't formulated a routine out of them, but I figure it will be cool.

Richie Saunder's method I think is still routine wise the better of the three, Check it out on his "close up assasin" tape through Camirand. No gimmicks or duplicate cards, lot's of room for comedy and a great souvenire at the end.

Marvelous, I'm sure his Great Detective routine is gimmicked. I think you may be thinking of another routine.

I am sorry it is somewhat gimicked. I usually don't think of a DB card as gimmicked but if you have to add it to the deck then it does fall into that category. My apologies.

Sanders version is totally impromptu, you only need a deck and sharpie, it is on his Richard Sanders show.
