I got this effect a couple weeks ago at my local magic shop. The cards that are supplied are very nicely made on thick stock. The printing is very dark black and sort of glossy. The symbols on the card are interesting as well and range from common symbols (i.e. a house, a tree) to abstract symbols (squares, lightening symbol).
The supplied instructions are detailed and explain how to do the routine clearly. They also explain clearly the "key" to the cards when using them. The only complaint I have is that my initial deck only had 38 cards instead of the advertised 40. When I took it back and exchanged it for another deck, the new deck also only had 38 cards instead of 40. Not a big deal, but the ad copy I read said the deck had 40 cards. Overall, a great mentalism effect that is easy to do! |

The ad copy said with "some 40 cards".
"They say time is money...i say time is precious"
"They say the whole is much more than the sum of its Parts...Thats why a man is much more than the sum of his Past!" |

It's a great effect. And if you get Max Maven's Videomind series, Volume 1 (Parlor Mentalism), it contains a complete how-to for making your own. An amazing mentalism bargain.

I like this effect but there is a caution. Sometimes the cards stick in both the shuffle process or the cut process. This, of course, can be deadly.

I made my own deck after watching Maven perform and explain it on Videomind vol 1. It's an excellent effect.

Alton: the sticking is due to the card stock. I had mentioned this on another thread and someone suggested that there is a teflon powder that might be helpful but I haven't tried this yet.

Xia,
The instructions that come with "Mind's Eye Deck" have illustrations of all the pairs of cards in the deck. The instructions show 20 pairs which totals 40 cards. The pair that was missing from both of the decks I got was the same pair: the key and the door symbols. Just trying to clarify the situation. You are right, though. The copy does say "some 40 cards." But the instructions that come with the effect do, indeed, show 20 pairs of cards, thus totaling 40 cards. I wonder why the manufacturer stopped including the two cards that picture a key and a door? Strange.... |

Hoodrat,
I just got my deck from Elmwood Magic. The door and key are in my deck but there are still only 38 cards. Another pair is missing. Also one of the pairs are the same in some way that they shouldn't be. I may have to return the deck because of this problem. Richard |

Doowopper,
You aren't referring to the two cards that have differning stars on them, are you? They're supposed to be that way -- look at them closer to discern the differences. Glad you got the deck with the door and key cards. You are the lucky winner of the $1 million dollar prize! lol |

Hi Hoodrat,
Yes, I did get the door and key cards. However, as I wrote in my previous post, the deck still has 38 cards. Another pair is missing. I closely looked at those two star cards. I don't see any difference in that pair. Yet that difference exists for all the other pairs. I will PM you. Perhaps you can help me understand the difference you mentioned. Richard |

Let me see... remove a different pair from 19 decks and you get a whole new deck to sell....
Only joking, not suggesting this happened at all! The manufacturer may have decided to cut down the number of cards to reduce costs. It does not harm the trick in any way. Sammy Smith did this with his Mental effect for kids with zoo animals. Initially it had ten pairs of cards then later went to eight. Of course if you do this it would make sense to alter the instructions accordingly. Personally, I would take "some 40 cards" as forty cards and "around forty cards" as somewhere around 40 cards. Obviously if the supplier sent out another set with 38 cards in he was unaware of the situation also (but I might have been inclined to check the next set before sending it out). It's a good trick I almost made up when I read it in his notes many years ago. Paul. |

I don't really care if the deck contains 38, 34 or 28 cards, the effect packs a wallop and is very practical. If you don't care much for the handling that Max demonstrates on the video (using the card case) or didn't find this method practical for table-hopping (my situation)- you can easily modify the handling to be more walk-around friendly.
