The upcoming and very much anticipated Houdiniana and Magic auction was featured on WGN TV this morning. It is a three minute segment with Gabe Fajuri of Potter and Potter Auctions. Gabe discusses and displays some of the items that will go up for auction this Saturday at 10AM CST in Chicago. There is a second part to the interview, but it hasn’t been posted yet. If they upload it, I will post it here. Here is the link to the video:

From article text...
"Harry Houdini’s amazing magic career took off just before the start of the 19 Century and today nearly 90 years after his death, he remains a household name." Oops. Otherwise, thanks for the links. Those were fun to watch.

Really THAT bad? Think I should free up some DVR space by deleting it? Nah.....
I can't imagine it's quite as bad as you say. If Nick Meyer was involved, there had to be something there worth investing time in. Making OR watching. Maybe I'll give it a try tonight. Unless, of course, there's a good baseball game on. |

They surely didn't let the "facts" get in the way of their writing.

Hmmmm.... I watched the documentary. Didn't seem bad, although there was some factual stuff that was missing. Or wrong. No big deal. It's television. C'mon....

It was a movie, not a documentary. Being broadcast on the History Channel makes the lay person think that the story is true. "Houdini: The Stinkeroo Movie" was far from it.

Didn't see the "movie" yet. I watched the doc with intros by Burton, Teller, etc. Sorry, Kevin.

Well, I finally got around to watching the "movie" over the past couple of nights. I really had hoped you guys were wrong and that I could support my arguments in favor of it. Sadly, that would be absolutely impossible.
I assumed that the people here would be upset by little details that were changed for the sake of a good story. In any non-documentary tale of a real-life person or event, a bit of artistic license should always be allowed. Unless you can call four hours a "bit," there's not much excuse for what was done in this case. I was trying to like this film. I really like the writer. He's done some great stuff. I'm not sure why this went so very wrong. Trying to see it as entertainment rather than biography, it appears that it fails, as well. Perhaps if about half of it were edited out and the main character had a different name, it could have been OK. Just OK. Everyone would know that, "Oh, this must be based on the Houdini story" and let it go at that. But that's not what happened. Climatically, the only thing I really loved was the bit where he put his mind inside the locks and we see the picks doing their thing. Yeah, I know it's just CGI, but it was a cool idea. Plus, it seems to be one thing that may possibly be factually accurate. Considering his many handcuff "challenges," Houdini must have been able to visualize the mechanisms of locks, don't you think? It was also nice to be able to speed through the commercials. In that way, I wasted considerably less time on this lousy thing than a lot of you folks who watched it as it aired. -MJ |

I had looked forward to this miniseries but after I watched it I was very disappointed. It was so historically inaccurate! I was not expecting that. Now a new wave of false Houdini tales will be all over the place. I still have to argue about the cause of his death from time to time due to the old Tony Curtis movie. I can hardly imagine how many false rumors will come from this miniseries.
