I found this in a library upstate recently.
A very interesting game; Scarne claims to have invented it.
Briefly: played on a 5x5 board, Teeko is a tic-tac-toe variant, the object being to get four in a row, in any row, column, diagonal, or 2x2 square formation. Lots of strategy detailed in the book.
I'm surprised I've never heard of it before. I don't recall Martin Gardner ever mentioning it.
Anyone else heard of it? I don't know why it isn't more popular. I don't know if the game is determined with rational play.

I remember reading about it but offhand I forget where. I also seem to recall that Scarne invented a number of other games, not 100% sure about that though.

I just checked my copy of Scarne on Dice. Teeko gets a brief mention in there:

"A game of skill is a game from which the element of chance has been utterly eliminated. Examples are Chess, Checkers, and three skill games that I invented myself: Teeko, Follow-the-Arrow, and Scarney."

The same book describes several of his other games in great detail: Scarney Dice, Skarney (yes, Skarney with a k), Skarney Gin, and Scarney Baccarat.

Teeko was reportedly starting to get some attention back in the 1950s. But apparently the entire warehoused stock of the game was destroyed by water damage and that was pretty much the end of it.

I'm lazy; so is it a forced tie, or a forced win for the first player?

Guess they forgot to tell Bill Buckley.

In all but two variations of the game, it is a tie IF both players play perfectly. (In the other two variations of the game - there are 16 total- it is a forced win for black.)
