Maybe Bobby Bernard had a point!

I wasn't personally attributing 'embellishment' or 'lies' to any particular part of the lecture, as I only watched the first two hours once. I was merely stating in my opinion, there is a notable difference between the two, although there will undoubtedly be someone who can give examples which may fall in a grey area.

FWIW, I would not put any false testimonials or company names on my website as it would not fit with my personal ethics or be needed for my part time business (I have enough genuine, auditable feedback). Having said that, I am not working for in a Billionaire resort or determined to become rich through magic (although it might be nice!).

I'm not being sarcastic as I can be at times, the following is a serious question.

If he, and others with whom he deals (possibly can get testimonials from) think that it is okay to lie, why should we believe what they are telling us in terms of how much they make or how to best get gigs?

"I'll lie to others but am telling you the truth (and you can check with these people who know me but apparently think it's also okay to lie)."

doesn't really instill a lot of confidence.

I know that certain things about his work can be proven, but anything beyond that becomes highly questionable coming from someone that thinks that lying is perfectly acceptable.

Isn't everything that is said about him to promote this lecture just marketing, about which it is okay to lie?

Aren't all magicians liars if you think about it?

No.

I know this is a commonly used saying, but I don't like it.

I tell people that I'm going to entertain them, and one of the ways that I will entertain them is possibly by fooling them. But really it's more about the entertainment (sadly, not all agree). And then I do it. Where's the lie?

Thank you, Bart. We are not liars.

We are putting on a show.

It's not that much different from someone who makes sci-fi movies or cartoons. Just because what happens on a movie isn't real, that doesn't mean that the makers are liars. However, if a movie maker were to say they have worked for a bunch of companies and that is not true, that IS a lie.

As a positive takeaway, his points could be put to good use in an ethical way. For example, embellishing the truth is still truth. At one point he said that if you perform at a BofA branch, then technically you can say you have performed for BofA. Nothing wrong with that.

Also, the idea of building an impressive list of referrals for your website is a good idea. If you call on Fortune 100 companies and offer a free magic show, even if it is at one of their local offices, you have still worked for them. In that case, I think it would be fair to conclude that using them as a referral is your compensation for the real work you really did. So, you worked for them, and you were compensated.

As for the Rolex, smash it with a hammer and throw it out. Nothing wrong with buying something really nice on sale or used. You can even get used REAL Rolex watches for just a few grand.

Why do people feel the need to lie anyway? The truth is so much more powerful. I built a business by being brutally honest and it got me in the top 1% in the industry.

Just go out there, be honest, and passionately follow a purpose. The rest will take care of itself.

BTW, if you offer to work for a Fortune 100 company, you still need to be accepted and actually work for them before you can ethically put it on your website... just to clarify.

I saw about half of it so far. I have mixed feelings. Unfortunately, I watched half of it right before watching a bio on Jerry Andrus. Not a good idea to watch Shimshi right after watching a bio on Jerry Andrus.

I felt like I had to take a break and take a shower to wash off the cheap, fake, bulls**t. Perhaps Shimshi is right about how many are lying in marketing and many are doing the "fake it until you make it". but, he is so wrong about what he thinks about wealthy people. DEFINITELY NOT ALL wealthy people are as focused on name brands as he thinks they are. There is a difference between a focus on quality and a focus on name brands. I am a multi-millionaire, I know a ton of multi-millionaires, and very few of us focus on trying to impress people with brand names.

On the other hand, I did learn some cool things from his lecture and it provided a lot of food for thought.

My advice for anyone watching this is this: You create your life, and everything in it. You don't need to fake anything to make anything. A perfect example is Mack King. In real life, he is a very regular guy. On stage he is a very regular guy. Of course, that's not the only image. If you want a similar image as Shimshi, then by all means, create what you feel is you and what makes you happy. However, don't do it to try to impress someone else.

Unfortunately, I only watched about half so far. I just felt like I had sleeze all over my body after watching half the live lecture and had to take a shower.

I did enjoy it, though, and thanks to Shimshi for sharing his knowledge.

I'll catch the rest later.

So far, I rate this a "two shower" lecture.

kj

Who cares if you're a multi-millionare? You think bragging about this makes you important?

Go take another shower and stop bragging about this, you ***.

1KG isn't a multi-millionaire. He's following Shimshi's advice and lying about it in order to make himself appear more successful than he is.

He really lives in the projects. Smile

MovieMan,

Why are you so angry? If I said "I work in a Las Vegas Casino" or "I wear blue jeans", you probably wouldn't have been so angry. Why does someone having money anger you?

Jamie is just having some innocent fun, it doesn't bother me.

Drink a beer and relax a bit.

Hey Joe,

He's got an irregular schedule at the Wynn. Sometimes he's in the restaurants, sometimes the Encore, and sometimes Wynn sets him up with private shows for high rollers. Most the people who see Shimshi are just at the right restaurant on the right night.
