When people pre-order, they know they're taking a risk. I have no problem with the concept if those who pre-order are not lied to and get something extra for having allowed the producer of the product to gain extra interest from having their money early. It's good marketing.
I get upset, though, when dates keep getting put back for no apparent reason. That then garners the producer a bad reputation which can only be bad for business. Rich |

On Sep 19, 2014, paw wrote: Hello, Paw! I don't mind trying to explain things to you. I may be Jack Straw from Wichita, but I am no longer the country rube that I used to be. When I first stepped off the bus from W to go to college in NYC, a guy came up to me and offered to take me to my school. He told me that I looked like a fresh-faced college kid and that NYC was a rough place. "I'll pop the trunk and just put your bags inside and we'll be on our way", he said. So I put my bags inside, and VROOM, off he went with all of my belongings. I later spotted him on the street and accosted him, but he told me all my belongings were sold and gone. He did offer me a well paying job with his Uncle Carmine delivering lizards to some cook in New Jersey, but that's a whole 'nother story. Anyway, do you expect me to ever take a ride from a stranger again? Well, Sankey took off with all of my belongings in a way. I used to like Jay an awful lot. He was one of the first guys that I discovered to buy magic from. It was hit or miss, as it always is in magic. I still use a good number of things that I learned from him, and for that I'm glad. Then I got the eMail for the Big A** Box of Magic, or BABOM. The details are a little fuzzy and I'm not sure of exactly what I'm about to say here, but for something like $200 you got quite a few items. "Hurry up", he said. I only have 50 of these available. He had a list of items you would get, "and more!'. I had some of the products, but there were plenty of them I did not have, and it seemed like a good deal, so I bought it. Then all of a sudden he found enough products in his warehouse to sell another 50 BABOM's. Strike one because of lie #1. I had way too long a wait for stuff that was laying in his warehouse. Strike two, although it was not a lie (although I don't remember if he filled us in on shipping time, but darn it, you have this stuff in stock, so be like Penguin and ship immediately)! I ended up not getting everything that was guaranteed to be delivered, and, yes, that made me angry because I was counting on getting those items. I did get plenty of things that I already owned, though. Strike three because of lie #2 or #3. I would have been better off just ordering the things that I wanted at the full price. I would point you to The Magic Café thread concerning that deal, BUT THE ENTIRE THREAD WAS DELETED! What does that tell you? Quite a few people were unhappy to say the least. See this thread here: http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......orum=218 Now lets talk about Cole Gross. Who is he, and what is his interest in posting here about pre-ordering? His dad owns Hocus Pocus magic. So when he comes on here talking about pre-ordering, is he looking out for you, or is he looking out for himself? I won't even bother answering that question. I, on the other hand, am definitely looking out for you. If Sean Giles came on here and said, "Listen, I own this and it is FANTASTIC! Get this and you won't regret it!", I would seriously consider getting it. Why? Because I've read many of his posts, and I feel like I know him. He's a straight-up guy, and stands to make nothing off of recommending it. He is a magician helping magicians. I feel like he is my pal. I trust him. I no longer trust Jay Sankey. If my auto mechanic kept telling me that I needed repairs that I did not need and I found out, would I laugh it off and give him 5 or 6 more chances? No I would not. Lastly, what do you get for pre-ordering? A long wait to actually get your items. Nothing else. If you got a price discount, which is what you should get, or some bonus items, then there is some incentive to take the plunge. There is no incentive to spend your money by pre-ordering. I struggle to pay my bills and buy magic at the same time. Magic is not food or gas or the mortgage. It's a fix that I need to have, and withdrawal is hard, so I have to choose my purchases pretty carefully these days. I'm done here. I'm shaking and my brain is very fuzzy, so I gotta go and take a snort of my latest dime bag. Then I'll feel a lot better.

So you're pre-ordering this, Mr Effecto?
I offered my explanation to Paw as requested. You don't have to stay awake for it. Let me know how you like "Devil's Tail". PS- No need to repeat my very long post when you're the very next comment and all it is is a lot of Z's. I'm still looking out for you, though. What did I say that doesn't ring true? I'm curious.

Hello Jack Straw,
I understand your frustrations. I am not a magician. I have been around magic my whole life as you can imagine, and I appreciate and enjoy it but it is not my hobby and I do not perform. You won't ever hear me say this is the greatest truck ever and I recommend it to all of the magic community. My job is to inform magicians about new tricks that may appeal to them. If you read my first post that started this thread I am simply announcing the release of this item. Not that you need it or that you in fact need to preorder it. If it is something that interests you (perfectly okay if it is not) and you don't want to preorder it, you can wait for it to be released. Hocus Pocus typically offers some type of incentive for pre orders (typically free shipping) which makes it worthwhile for many people. It also will ensure you delivery of the product as soon as it becomes available as we have pre ordered the item for you from the supplier, so it helps us to make sure we have the right quantity to fill the orders. As I said earlier I can appreciate your situation and I understand you would rather hear a magician tell you that this is an item you should buy rather than hear me tell you. I will never tell a magician they should buy anything. I believe that as a performing artist you should find the effects that are right for you performing style. My job is to make suggestions to help you find those things, and ensure good customer service in case there are issues with the product down the road. As a consumer of other goods I hate when people suggest things that I end up not liking, all because they wanted to make a sale. I make sure I never do that. I would rather have a happy customer that will come back to buy from me because they appreciate the service instead of just making one sale for something that wasn't right for them. If you have any questions for me or if there is anything I can help you with please let me know. I am always available to try and help. I hope that helps you and others understand my intentions and activity on the Café. Cole |

Sean I have had my disagreements with you on occasions but your comment re pre orders is absolutely right
Mr Efffecto your zzzzzzz was unnecessary and very rude Jack that must have been one hell of an experience . As I have said on previous posts re pre orders I have been very dissapointed and suckered in to the Hypes on several occasions as I know Jack Magic and Jack Straw have and assume by his comments so has Sean Giles If something is that good and often they are they will make enough for us all We in trying to help fellow magicians with our experiences is what the Café is all about If you choose to disregard our advice that's perfectly fine If it makes you think before parting with your hard earned money then the advice was worth our efforts |

Pre-order or ordering when available, there is no difference for the initial people who order. Without any reviews, you are taking the same risk either way.
On the subject of Sankey ordering, I am probably reaching my end as well. So much rehash I rarely see anything that is an improvement of what I am currently using. Historically, about every five years he comes up with something really new and interesting, but it's getting harder and harder to sift through the Sankey weeds. KJ |

Not sure why people argue for/against pre=ordering. I personally think its silly and almost never justified, so I never pre-order. If others want to do it, it's their call == none of my business really. If enough people get tired of pre-order issues it will go away of its own accord -- if people keep pre-ordering then we have no one to blame but ourselves and just need to make the personal decision to ignore them.

Wow, after all these years I see this thread again. I did eventually order this one, not as a pre-order, and I still use this, after all these years. I use it in conjunction with Greg Wilson's Ring Leader, combining moves and phases. One of the things I have come to realize with Sankey is that I LIKE his instruction. I have large bulky hands, and he has small hands. I guess what we both have in common is that neither one of us has normal sized hands with a lot of dexterity. As a result, I find that Sankey puts a lot of thought into how to do moves in easier, perhaps better ways. I also like that he is clever and thinks about new ways to do old things. For example, I like his adaptation of the Williamson toss to make a ring appear on the string.
In summary, I REALLY LIKE DEVIL'S TAIL. KJ |

Devil's Tail is really good as is Ring Leader. And for the trifecta, the Relentless Ring And String by Bob Miller and DJ Ehlert is pretty good too.

The rope that comes with the DVD is horrible, and so is the ring

I love this effect. It has a modern feel. I ordered mine years ago and still use it. Not sure what ring or string they may be providing now, but what I got is magnificent, both the ring and string. Also - I didn't feel like I had enough string, so I emailed Sankey magic and they sent me about a yard of it, no charge. That's customer service.
...forever curious
