A friend turned me on to an awesome site for keeping track of the happenings among the best of the chess world: 2700chess.com

Fabriano Caruana is ripping through thee strongest chess tournament in history. Six players are in the event, and the lowest rated player is #9 in the world. Nearing the halfway point (it's a ten-round double round robin), Caruana hasn't been nicked for so much as a draw, posting a 4-0 record and opening up a full 2-point lead on the field. He's beaten the world's #1, #3, #6, and #9 players, who have an average rating of over 2800 FIDE. It's an awesome performance so far; none of the other five players has a plus score.

Caruana has been a beast. Looking forward to seeing how he holds up. What is he thinking right now?

It'll be interesting to see if he keeps dancing with the take-no-prisoners style that's gotten him this far or tries to go into safety mode and coast to the title (and the hundred grand). He's certainly not out of reach of the others (especially Carlsen, of course), but if he keeps playing like this, it's hard to see him not winning this thing.

I, a complete chess duffer, got to play against Fabriano in an outdoor simultaneous chess exhibition held in NYC, oh around 10 years ago. We were about twenty boards as I recall.
I think he actually made a careless mistake, and I lasted substantially longer than most of the others. I think I was in the final five. Of course, I had no idea how to take advantage and was soon defeated.

Nice, landmark. Fabiano would have been about 12 then.

There was an hustler I knew, he used to play blindfolded against one more players. I used to play often when was a kid but I can't remember the last time I played. I was used play against lawyer, one a week he would come over once a week and beat me. I won one game against him in a year and to play like crazy to do it.
If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.

It looks like he has Nakamura completely busted, too. If he finishes him off, he'll be at a perfect 5-0 at the halfway point, AND Topalov knocked off the second place player, France's Vachier-Lagrave, which means his lead over the field will increase to 2.5 points.

Caruana polishes off Nakamura. And Carsen defeats Aronian, who has lost 3 in a row. Wonder how long it's been since he's done that?
Thank you Rex Sinquefield for putting together such an interesting tournament!

Topalov is completely dead in the water...Caruana will run the streak to 6-0... ridiculous.

SEVEN! To put this into context, Caruana's expected score at this point is probably 4-3. 4.5-2.5 would be quite a good score, which would be (among other possibilities) two wins and five draws. 5-2 would be outstanding. 7-0 is completely off the statistical chain.

And clean, forceful wins too. It's absolutely amazing.
Tomorrow Caruana plays Carlsen again. It's showtime!

Carlsen presumably out for revenge, and he's put together a little win streak of his own and opened up a full-point lead ahead of third place.

Caruana has a marked advantage against the world champion, and IMO, he will run his score to 8-0.

Caruana appears to have a huge number of weaknesses. If the attack doesn't get through, Carlsen should smash white's position. But Caruana has a nice solid attack for the moment, I don't see Carlsen's central break coming for a while. (Carlsen just played 20...Bc6)

I think Carlsen's weaknesses (specifically, the backward d6 pawn on the half-open file and the overly advanced and effectively isolated pawn at a3 are as pronounced as Caruana's structural weaknesses, and he's got a lack of space and a questionable kingside to boot.
Of course, my rating is markedly below 2800 (let alone 2877!), so I imagine Carlsen sees a few things in there that I don't.
