Two-part US drama following the tale of escapologist Harry Houdini as he emerges as America's first bona fide, world-renowned superstar. Adrien Brody, Kristen Connolly and Evan Jones star.Might be worth a look.

Not sure what I think of Adrien Brody as Houdini; he is a little on the lean side. Actually, he is downright scrawny. I was a big fan of the 1998 Houdini movie staring Johnathon Schaech and Mark Ruffalo.
All small town magicians know what 793.8 signifies.

Scrwany yeah...and I know this makes me shallow (more than shallow, downright un-PC!) but I struggle with that Beaky Buzzard look...it just ain't Houdini's mug, not even close...

As a Docu-Drama, the props and costumes were outstanding. As a accurate history piece, not so much. Houdini's life was amazing enough so as not to need "punching up" to make his story interesting. Shades of the 1957 Tony Curtis "Houdini".
The 21st Century mannerism implants of speech and attitude are getting tiresome in these period pieces. Perhaps Part Two will improve. Pete

It was bizarre. It takes an ego larger than HH's to think they could tell the story of one of the greatest showman better than the way he lived it.
The secret to why history has been twisted is revealed. It is either the writers lack of research, the promise of a large check, or a combination. I will remember this presentation as the way not to do things.

As Fire Starter said, part 1 is on Channel 4 next Saturday.
I've read a number of reviews and also seen the trailer on IMDB. I'll be giving it a miss. Barry |

There's 4 hours of my life I'll never get back, lol. My wife actually watched it too, being a fan of Brody ever since The Brothers Bloom (in which Andy Nyman had a role), making it less likely she'll ever watch anything magic related again! Though she loves Depp and I see on IMDB that he's slated to play Houdini in the adaptation of the Kalush biography. Now that could be interesting!
They touched on the Houdini as spy concept in the History Channel fiasco but it was just as trivial and convoluted as the rest of the movie. How many times did they show HH taking a gut punch (including an apparently required x-ray view) as a metaphor for hearing upsetting news? It became laughable after the first couple times. The ads for other HC epics seemed cut from the same mold. |

I don't believe he ever did the Bullet catch. Whatever happened to trusted Theo? I didn't know Bess smoked pot. I was disappointed as well.

I'm not sure where to begin in describing how much I hated this! (And I sooooooo wanted to like it!)
From the Chris Angels Nü metal soundtrack to the reality show editing job... it was a train wreck of epic proportions. IMHO it's greatest sin was in demystifying Houdini within the first 5 minutes. From the first shot of Houdini untaping a handcuff key from his foot, he ceased being a magician or escape artists and was debased to being "dude that taped a key to his foot". Or "Dude that hid a key in other clever places." It never ended. Every illusion was debased into where he hid the key. If you're going to do a movie about a magician you don't do it by showing the mundane method of how EVERY trick was accomplished. Maybe their motivation was to show the man behind the illusion.. but end result was schlocky, disrespectful and probably what I should have expected from the History channel. Houdini is spinning in his grave!! |

Well after just watching the first episode, what do I think?.It is alway's nice to see a film or a show on the art that we all love, hey that's why we joined the Café in the first place,i liked it it was enjoyable ,but the fact's where just not there,Glamed up ,CIA and russian spy's ,oh dear ,but I did enjoy it and how many times do hollywood or ealing studio's bugger's up a good book or a portrayal of what the real story or person was,in most cases all the flippiing time,so I just sat back and enjoyed it for what it was,no more no less. There is not enough magic programmes may it be a documentry or a show/film on the TV,so a wellcome change for me.
