My hidden agenda was that this thread now contains enough searchable terms to be picked up by search, so hopefully a few people will read it and get the message...probably not, but if it stops a couple, good...

I think that if you want to curtail "exposure" here, the most effective way to do so is to make it personal. Share specific stories about how you were approached after a show where someone told you how they knew what you did because they googled the perceived effect and found the answer on "some kind of magic restaurant website." Talk about how you and other performers you know we're hurt financially and/or emotionally by this stuff. Making it real on an individual level instead of hypothetical on a global level is the only way to affect people, IMHO. Without the specifics, it's just theory.

You're spot on, Iain. In my lonely hunger I just searched "Frozen meal for one" on Google, and it brought me here.
(But seriously, I don't understand what you mean in that last post - what sort of searchable terms, and how does that stop people?)

When people search here for certain words "free", "techniques", "secrets" and so on...this thread contains enough of those words to pop up in the search...
CJ - have you been at the jazz cigarettes recently?

This place here has been the ruination of our industry and that's a fact wether you accept it or not.

While many consider The Magic Café a public forum (and it is in the sense that any person from the general public may join), this forum is in fact a private business. We are all here as guests. The rules governing this private business, whilst influenced by the membership, are ultimately determined by the person or persons who own the business.
Certainly the concern of exposure of methods is not limited to mentalism. It is a concern of all who participate on The Café. And concerns over exposure cannot possibly be new. Has anyone contacted Steve Brooks for his input how how to appropriately deal with exposure concerns? For those who are truly worried that exposure on Penny is damaging to the profession, then why not just leave and start your own private, paid forum, and stop participating here altogether? The answer is because the economics would not work. A private, paid forum in a niche as small as mentalism would not survive without a constant stream of new people hearing about, discovering, and becoming interested in your private forum. And for that, a googleable, publicly accessible, free forum is not only valuable, but required for survival. |

It's always been my contention to abandon the searchable Penny forum completely, and post exclusively about all mentalism related matters Downstairs. A mass expatriation.
I submit that it ought not even be known that a mentalism community exists in the Café. This may be considered extreme by some, but I feel, appropriate for the concerns we have, feel, and are trying to reconcile.

Other places, like the TalkMagic forum, have the mentalist area ONLY for mentalists, no googleable and it's lock down for everyone else.
I think that's a good idea for the Café, and to get in, have some sort of questionnaire that only a serious mentalist could anwer.

If the regular folk post exclusively downstairs in inner thoughts - that leaves here fresh and free for newbies to be explicitly open about their wants and needs... when we post up here, at least it kinda disguises those threads...
i propose this: rather than constantly bump threads with pointless "this should be in inner thoughts" and NOT reporting it is completely pointless...all it does is place it up the top again...so if you see something that is a bit too much, don't respond to it, just report it... report not respond the more people who report the same thread, the more likely it is that it'll get moved downstairs or deleted... make sense? once its moved downstairs we can explain why we reported it and didn't respond... the forum does not believe a sticky thread is worthwhile - so maybe this thread will have to do... we do not reveal secrets we do not use full terms and phrases out in the open (that are secret and critical to a presentation) we do not try and reverse engineer someone else's non-published work and use it

Completely agree. Posting downstairs almost exclusively will go a long way to solving the problem we face.

However, if the Penny forum is completely dead, why would the newbies post on a barren forum? Even if they do, you can still do what you're saying, rightly so, which is to report it. Since Penny would also be abandoned, you also reduce the risk that someone will inadvertently post something revealing. Either way, reporting is the only means we have, but how effective that is, I do not know.

Exactly - we can't enforce it, but those that care can try... its all we've got...we can make it easier for moderators to see that there's a problem, and who knows - maybe if it happens often enough, they'll make a change - I dunno...
but we need to recognise we can't demand anything, this is here because people are paying for it, and some give their time up to help run it for nothing...we get a forum that is always the sum of the users - if we don't like it, then its probably healthier (as in, for your own mental health) to walk away from the place for a while...afterall, it is just a forum...however, users still need to realise that secrets need to be kept so, for very good reason(s)... so if you see a thread and its too revealing, resist the urge to just post "this should be downstairs", leave it, report it, and when its moved - explain why it was reported and moved..
