Scarlet Witch was handled ok. But that is ok and kind of the end of the list.

I found her TV series refreshing but the most the movies could do with her was make her a sympathetic villainess. It is comic accurate, though.

That's kind of a side issue I have with both the shows and movies is how often they have ladies introduced as good break bad. It's repetitive. Peggy's niece, Daredevil's awful new girlfriend, it's just the same twist over and over.

Don't get me wrong, these are minor gripes. Overall, I still like most of these movies and shows.

In reality most of the story telling is repetitive. Heck it goes back to Beowulf or the Canterbury Tales. I do agree.

I mean there's several movies I like that all have the same plot as Enter The Dragon so maybe I shouldn't complain.

And how many great Westerns are just remakes of samurai movies?

I do like familiar things done in new ways like song remixes or heavy metal covers of pop songs and bluegrass covers of heavy metal songs too. As long as it's done WELL.

I remember the guy who made "The Seven Samurai" was asked how he felt about "The Magnificent Seven," he said; "Great, they paid me for the rights to the story!"

Interestingly enough the film's core story of farmers needing protection and seeking help from samurai is a common trope in Japanese culture. Those legends go back to oral tradition. Funny enough the director actually cited John Ford western movies as some influence! Talk about a snake eating its own tail LOL. The plot and the characters are 100% original.

Like I said though many movies follow that epic storytelling arch. Gathering hero's, tasking the hero's, separating them, bringing them back for the completion of the task. From the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen to most of the Marvel movies this really is most of the deal. Heck straying FROM this formula is sort of what gets Marvel to have less than stellar movie outings! But it is familiar because it has been done since before mankind could write. The key is the characters and their development. Which brings us full circle to why Marvel has done a better job in the movies than DC.

I did a report on John Ford in an elective I took and he cited Kurosawa as an influence on him as well. Guess it went both ways.
Two great directors. Ford's cinnamontography was amazing. His use of natural framing was just phenomenal.

As for the character notion, I agree. I think that helped Marvel a lot that by the time Avengers came out we were already invested in these characters individually from some excellent stand alone movies.

Which was obviously their intent.

Iron Man casting of Downey was critical. Such a great choice.

Hard to imagine anyone else in the role.
Not a popular choice but the third Iron Man was my favorite of the Iron Man solo movies. A lot of bold creative choices made in that one.

Whole family liked *Thunderbolts. Only thing I can't help wondering after all these Marvel movies is why anyone still lives in New York in that Universe.

I was thinking about that when I watched it. Told my wife after to see if your name was in the credits under stunts.

Why would anyone live in either Gotham or Metropolis in THEIR universe?

Because there is Batman and Superman?
Not to mention Catwoman and Harley Quinn.

Why? I wonder how. That question also comes to mind about Tokyo in Japanese monster movies. Smile

It's kind of like the metalwork involved in a levitation. Disbelief needs to be suspended by something. Smile

In John Scalzi's novel "Redshirts" that question and one possible answer are part of the story.

I suppose people live in California, which could fall into the Ocean; Vegas, which is full of scorpions and doesn't have its own water; Seattle and Hawaii, which could explode; Florida, which is Florida...

Heck, some people refused to leave that Centralia place that Silent Hill was based on.

I guess it's not that hard to believe.

Australia, where EVERYTHING is trying to kill you! However, the 70's "Superman" movie notwithstanding, the San Andreas fault runs North and South, so California is in no danger of falling into the sea! However, some day, San Diego will be NORTH of Los Angeles!

My family was in Mt. St. Helen's park shortly before it blew its top and people wouldn't heed the warnings and leave.

How can DC catch up to Marvel was the original question, I believe?

It can't, especially with the new Superman movie that's coming out.
