I heard Gunn said that was just a rumor. Seems unlikely they'd replace him at this point, given the financial success of his projects. Weirder things have happened, though.

Yes, Superman did pretty well in the US. But international markets didn't care.

I'm not defending it, I didn't think it was that great a movie. I don't even like Gunn that much as a director half the time. I personally think he's usually bad at sequels. The Guardians of the Galaxy movies got progressively worse to me with each sequel. But the first one was good and different, Peacemaker is really good, his Suicide Squad movie is the only good one, and Creature Commandos is kind of okay, I guess. I do like his insistence on not moving forward with any projects until they receive a quality script. I just think he and I have very different ideas about what a quality script is.

OK I have a question about sequels and such.
Isn't any Sups story now told in movies pretty much a sequel? I mean barring a new origin and all that aren't we in a world where when the character fits into a "universe" or whatever every movie is sort of a sequel? I mean no matter who is playing the roll or who is directing or producing pretty much all superhero movies are now sequels unless they introduce a new main protagonist. I have said it before that Stan Lee said one time how difficult it is to write for almost omnipotent characters. What can threaten them? What makes them relatable? Sups is a tough challenge for certain. At least the Hulk can't fly, can't have heat vision, frost breath or throw his S symbol like Christopher Reeve. This probably accounts for the popularity of "street tier" characters in both companies. Ol' Sups has always been tough to write for beyond his origin story. That probably accounts for the popularity of Smallville. It was a 10 year examination of his origin story. All the Arrowverse stories for that matter were sort of stuck in origin mode for a while.

It's funny, I was just thinking how most of the really good stuff in DC and Star Wars the last decade or two have been in the animated realm. DC has done animated versions of Death of Superman and Elseworlds stories like Red Son that diverged from the Reeve paradigm.
I liked the idea of Superman as a villain because it's absolutely terrifying but that's been kind of done to death lately too. I will say I liked the overall message they were going for in Gunn's Superman, even if I didn't like most of the execution.

The $125 profit is only for six weeks in US theaters. It doesn't include the streaming or international which at one point I heard was around $600 million.
By most accounts, while it's not an overwhelming success, it was profitable enough.

A guy from another planet, the whole red sun thing, the crashing to earth thing, the yellow sun affecting him as such and I somehow draw the line at his dog? Kind of dumb when you think of it. I am certainly in the minority because they brought him back from the great beyond due to fan demand. I guess Gunn's own dog was used as the 3D model for the dog in the movie. That is cool. Still doesn't make up for him being a dumb idea in my opinion.

I didn't like the animated super pets movie. Even if John Wick did play Batman in it.
