LXG wasn't bad at all.

I didn't finish LXG, but I read and watched both versions of "The Watchmen" and didn't hate the movie.

I felt the changes that were made actually made the story flow better from a cinematic point of view.

Mind you, this isn't what I want from ALL superhero movies. One is quite enough.

You sir are correct. Many cinematic adventures must out of necessity be altered. Origins in a box happen quite often. Also they are not necessarily targeted at fans so the change go quite unnoticed.

A fine line to walk to be certain

Going back to the topic at hand. Marvel has of course gone to great lengths to craft the "Marvel Cinematic Universe." DC now seems to be trying that by bring Wonder Woman into the Superman vs Batman film, and then building that into the Justice League. Of course DC is claiming they are leading with their "Big 3" Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman. DC should not call Wonder Woman part of the big three. Wonder Woman has always been one of the lowest selling books DC has. he only reason the book has been published consistently since 1940 or when ever it was is due to contractual ownership right obligations.

I am hopeful for the movie next week. I think Gal did a fine job in SvB. I hope she will be as good as a stand alone.

I am just afraid that DC is trying to rush what Marvel has spent years building, and as such it may not succeed. Personally I hope it does.

I am hopeful but doubtful. The problem with W squared is she is another omnipotent type and that is tough to write for.

It is the problem with Sups. (Marvel has that problem with Hulk and Thor.) Once a character is so powerful it makes it tough to write anything to rattle them.

I remember Stan Lee doing a comic signing at the shop I worked at in the early 90's. I was talking to him about this problem. He said it is a great reason to make people flawed like teenagers, drunks, ego maniacs, or any number of things to be their weakness. It makes it so much easier to write interesting stories for them in his view.

Is he correct? Don't know. But I do enjoy the flawed charecters far more myself. In DC Batman, Green Arrow, and the more human flawed are always more relatable to me.

Good point Danny.

I loved it when Marvel (80's I think) rated their heroes for Strength. Captain America was 1. Spider-man was 5 and the Hulk, when Banner first changed was 75. Thor was rated at 100. This was a measure of tons of lifting strength that the heroes had. That made it easy to think about what a hero could do, and could not. Today it seems like Spider-man is rated strong enough to take on the Hulk. That should not be.

Using the Marvel Scale, Wonder Woman should probably have a strength around 5. At that level she would have to be careful not to kill a human with a single punch, but could still be menaced by a number of things far stronger than she is. Obviously when you take Superman and have him fight another Kryptonian, there will be major collateral damage. We saw this in SvB. How much such damage can cities really take.

One of the reasons for the creation of Thor in the Marvel universe was to go toe to toe with the Hulk. Hulks strength bring literally limitless and all.

It is interesting that the Super Soldier program intensifies his soldier ability more than just strength in Cap.

It is why they keep having to muck about with reasons why Hulk is grey or Thor losses favor with Odin or what not.
All powerful is boring as can be.

Based on Danny's preference for heroes with flaws, I surmise that one of his favorites is Cyclops because of Cyke's angst and anguish that he cannot control his optic-beam. Cyclops is also innovative and unusual in that his superpower is both a blessing and curse at the same time. The Avengers may be called the mightiest team but the X-Men were known as the most unusual team (of which Cyclops is a member). In fact, in the early 1960s, each issue's cover was emblazoned with the blurb " the world's most unusual fighting team." For my money I prefer unusual.

Which superhero is normal?
If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.

To answer Tommy, I would say normal applies to Batman. What I base my answer on is from watching the TV documentary on Batman in which the point was made that Batman is not even a superhero because he has no superpowers at all. That point was made by a DC-writer so it must have some validity.

Many of the usual suspects have no super powers neither: super clever perhaps, evil genius types. I think some of them villains are based on real people that want to rule the world – like those evil climate scientists. Smile

Certainly true about what you said as to the grievance aspect of Batman and Green Arrow. That's why fans have been saying that the difference between the DC movies and Marvel movies is that DC plays it dark whereas Marvel movies are somewhat on the lighter side.(Granted, the latest Wolverine movie was dark but that was the exception rather than the rule.) Maybe DC should lighten up a bit in order to catch up to Marvel.

I think it's just that Marvel better understands the audiences that go to see these movies.
That, and the fact that the Marvel characters are by and large more popular.

And the writing of the D.C. movies really does suck.

Today I saw "Wonder Woman." Definite two thumbs up. Acting was great. Writing was suburb. The plot made sense. The movies' pacing was good. No spoilers here, but it also did something that has never been done for Wonder Woman. It made her believable. I saw the movie in 3D for no reason other than timing of the shows. I prefer not to see movies in 3D and I don't think this movie needed it.

Remember, comic books are mostly written and drawn by men and sold for boys. There are certainly female comic book fans, but there are far fewer. This has always made WW hard to write and hard to believe.

Lynda Carter was a beautiful WW who probably could have taken the role far were it not for limited budget, limited special effects of the time and really really bad writing.

Anybody remember Kathy Lee Crosby as WW in the early 1970's? Ricardo Montalban was the villain.

Taking my hat off to Gal Gadot and all those involved.

BTW: back to Orville's original question, if DC keeps putting out films like this, then maybe they can catch up.

There are quite a few "superheroes" without powers. The Vigilante, Wildcat, the original Atom was nothing more than a short person who had trained himself as a fighter. There was an entire episode of "Justice League - Unlimited" that had a parade of superheroes, the problem was, there was a event happening that had drawn away all the "A" listers and left only the "unpowered" superheroes to appear and take on a meta-hating general who mutated himself to destroy the Justice League. Someone else pointed out that the only "meta" human in this fight was him!

There's more (imho) to being a "superhero" than being a meta-human.

My wife goes to all the super hero movies with me somewhat begrudgingly. She says that Wonder Woman is now her favorite Super Hero movie. I thought it was pretty good although a few scenes were a bit too derivative for me. Guardians is still my favorite for the year so far.
