Does anyone know where to buy this effect (or have any opinions on it)?
It was at Hank Lee's, but is no longer in stock. It's your basic Mental Epic but with index cards, colored crayons, and what seems to be a "no-force" at the end (for $20). The description follows: "Prediction in Color is an absolutely brilliant triple prediction effect using the simplest of props: some 3x5 index cards, a large card and three crayons. Ask a spectator to silently think of her age. Using a red crayon, draw a line on the large card. Using the same crayan, make a prediction on one of the 3 x 5 cards. The spectator states her age and you write it in red next to the line on the large card. A second spectator thinks of any number from 1 to 100. Using the green crayon, draw a line on the large card. Using the same green crayon, write your prediction on one of the 3 x 5 cards. The spectator names her number and you write it in green next to the line on the large card. Finally, a third spectator thinks of the last two digits of her phone number. Using a brown crayon, draw a line on the large card, then write your prediction in brown on one of the 3 x 5 cards. She names her phone number and you write the last two digits in brown on the large card. Each time you write your prediction, you show the color of the crayon by making a line on the large card. It is as fair as fair can be. Show the 3 x 5 cards. The three predictions exactly match the information written on the large card. And, the colors are exactly the same!" -$19.95 |

My opinion is that this would be quite easy to make up if you can't locate the source. E-mail me privately if you need details.
I did an internet search and only found the old listings of Hank Lee. Perhaps an e-mail to Hank, asking him if it will be available again would be in order.

I've seen similar things in the past with coloured pens and to be honest, and thinking logically, if you are writing on three cards why do you need to write in different colours? And why crayons? This is a magicky solution to a mental effect.
Of course, the coloured crayons (wax?) may be better when working in padded cells Paul. |

Paul,
I think this color thing is designed to throw off those who know the one ahead principle. I'm sure it is lost on most spectators, but may puzzle some magicians. asmayly, I have the trick, but have one problem using it. The colors are red, brown, and green, and those are the three colors I have the most difficult time with due to my color blindness (actually color deficiency). For this reason, I decided to make up a version in more distinctive colors like blue, red, and maybe green or something. Of course, I haven't gotten around to it yet. Although this is not a simple "no force" mental epic, he does give you a simple (but not always practical) suggestion to avoid a force on the last item (which would work as well as with mental epic). I don't use it too often. However, since I got it, I have not used my mental epic slate. While Paul may be right about the colors being a bit unusual, crayons and index cards are not as unusual as a slate divided into six boxes! It seems impromptu, but is not, as you receive gimimicked props to carry out the effect. |

I see this is going to open up a can-o-worms on the "CERBERUS" 3-pahse prediction genre.....!

I just ordered it ACCIDENTALLY from Hank Lee's.
I ordered it right away from the warehouse because someone there told me they were out. But then the warehouse said they had one. Anyway, afterwards I called about the last bit ("the person's last 2 digits of their phone #") and what do you know, it was P-S (a force). (Now that ad is a bit misleading ...) Anyway, Hank said I could return it--that's pretty decent. The reason though I'm interested in the 3 color business is because more and more I get a person who figures out the one ahead. (Surprisingly, women are figuring it out more--I think it was something to do with that less logical thinking which turns out to be more logical.) Also, engineer types seem to come up with it, too. I agree that most people don't figure it out, but there is something a bit "fishy" when you ask for whatever they thought-of to be written down "before" you reveal your answer. (My usual explanation is so they can't change their minds once I reveal my answers.) I've pretty much have decided to exclude mental epic type effects for stage and do a "cerebus" thingy for imtimate impromptu once I get them going. I think Bob Cassidy has some good thinking on one-aheads that use switches, forces, and no-forces with a one-ahead so it's not as obvious. Asmayly |

Instead, for food for thought, work out your own one-BEHIND routine...

In my version, I select big cards out of a jumbo deck after each of three cards is selected, but before its identity is revealed. The first selection is made with the cards fanned face up, and the spec never touches the cards. Then I "get the thought" and set aside one of the jumbo cards, propped up back to audience. Then spec announces card which is written on a large pad in full view. Second selection is made without using the deck at all - a card is just "thought of" and handled the same way. Third selection is made by taking any card "a physical selection" - with the cards fanned face down. Spec offered chance to "touch another" before card is removed from deck. Fair, fair, fair. Then all is revealed. I am "off by one" on one of the "received thoughts". This kills laymen! The easy method? - think "Mirage".
