As a full time performer obviously my ideal situation would be to work with as few items as possible, ideally pen and paper and perhaps a deck of cards.
For the last few years I've always performed wearing a suit jacket which is enough to carry all the things I need for my walk around act. However I've become increasingly frustrated at always having to wear a jacket especially during the summer outdoors. It also restricts fashion options which as a performer can be half the fun! I've decided to try working in a short sleeved shirt/t-shirt (no waistcoat). Ideally I will eventually have an act where I have hardly any props on me but in the meantime I found that using a shoulder bag works great for what I do. I can of course entertain well with just one or two items but the magic doesn't end up as strong as what my clients are used to and I always want to do the strongest effects possible. I just wondered what everyones thoughts are on carrying a shoulder bag, especially as a mind reader? |

There are bags and there are bags - make sure you get one that looks tidy and represents your performance style. In my opinion, it is contextually congruent for you to have a small bag - you are a professional performer with things to carry, and you've got a bag to put them in. That said the smaller the bag you can get away with carrying the better simply so that it is unobtrusive when you are performing. Small bags like this used to be hard to find but thanks to the advent of the 7 / 8" tablet they are plentiful now. If you google 'ipad mini shoulder bag' there are loads of choices with a range of styles: here's a pinterest board (for example) with a bunch of nice ones on. http://www.pinterest.com/bestoftheweb/ip......er-bags/
Personally: I've done walkaround with a little shoulder bag before and because I thought people might find it odd I originally made a joke about my magic man-bag - no-one ever thought it unusual enough to comment on so I stopped. I'm sure some people will suggest that it will make audiences think you are a magician, but what you do will define you far more than how you carry your notebook. If, when you walk away from the table, the thing that sticks out in their mind is your bag, then your bag is not your biggest problem. It would be interesting to hear what other people think. Phill

I always wear a suit or sports coat, and I don't want my pockets to bulge when I have a couple of extra pens or a small notepad with me, so I bring everything in my briefcase. In the venue where I usually perform, there is usually a barstool on which I can set my case. I have a very small table in the car in case the barstool is not available. The case works well.
Having said that, I see nothing wrong with a shoulder bag. I haven't considered one since I already carry a briefcase. |

That's fantastic advice cheers guys!
I'll post photos of the bag I've been using for you to see. As much as I didn't want to compromise and carry a bag, it is really good to having everything in its own place and ready to go |

It depends in what your style is, as Phillsmiff said.
If you are performing in a formal venue, a briefcase it's the best option. If you are performing out doors and you are dressing casual, a bag it's fine. I personally never perform with just a T-shirt and jeans (Even when the day is hot!) Because that's not the image I want to give; for me, dressing casual its wearing a weistcoat at minimum! But that's me. Hope it helps

Here in Phoenix I wear a man-bag with a strap that I use for strolling. I got the idea from Mentalist (and cool guy) David Meade in the UK when I saw him in Vegas last year - really a help at strolling gigs.
I hate wearing a jacket when it 115 out- but it is pretty much a must for most corporate events.

In a paid gig I would never be without a jacket, as already stated it's not the image I want to portray, especially not as a mentalist. Of course being in cold wet England it's pretty easy. Were I in a hot country I might feel differently about that image.

Thanks guys I appreciate your thoughts!
The bag doesn't need to be as big as this one, although its not huge it probably looks bigger in the picture. Its just a bag I used to use and had kicking about. Its about the size of a small laptop, but looks bigger as it is curling round my leg. If I decide to keep using one then I will probably buy something a bit smaller and nicer looking. |

I never liked seeing a bag used for walk around, let along one that looked like a large purse or diaper bag.
Fanny packs are not the in thing anymore and looks odd today. Just look around, do you see anyone wearing them? The in thing today are backpacks and that (to me) isn't cool either for walk around. I carry a wallet (wink) with billets, and two mentalism cards that plays really well. I have the book reflections in my pocket and a ring on my finger that I use for 'the ritual' . Add a pendulum, palm reading, A to Z, walk around hypnosis and other prop less mentalism and you can do a full a complete act. All this done just by working out of two or three pockets and your own abilities. Heck, if you carry a butterfly, you can do a DD, and then use the notebook for a Psychometry drawing (Luca). With all that said, why would you need a bag? Three pockets and prop less mentalism. |

An alternative is to wear a vest with two outer side pockets and an outer breast pocket. I use this look for casual events that makes me look a little more dressed up than the guests and allows me to carry more items.

When I use to do magic a number of years back, I of course had props on me. So I would use a high caliber hostler (vest) and I loved it. I worn it under my jacket. One time, I had a t-shirt on and just that vest and it worked very well. I can't speak highly enough about that vest.

Ha that's amazing proper cowboy!
If I'm using just pockets in my jeans, I do a deck switch so need one back pocket for that, another pocket for my wallet, another for my pocket index, and another for a deck of cards and pen That doesn't leave much room for a notepad, or any of Craig or Sorens products. I also do a lot of effects using my phone. |

I just use a samsonite black briefcase. I do not wear any bag type. Looking or feeling loaded (heavily) is not my style. that's me.
