As a, relatively, short Italian from Brooklyn, I learned sarcasm at the same time I learned to speak. As to your comment about the laughable nature of having the solution to all humanities problems, it wasn't my intention to seem as if I did. I think that at one time or the other, we all ask the questions "Where did we come from, why are we here and what consequences are our actions leading to?" I think we all must NEVER stop asking those questions, since they are the basis of our spirituality. If we stop asking them we allow others to answer them for us by default. That is why we're seeing the attack on our rights. As a whole we've stopped questioning and the vaccuum gets filled by others. And make NO mistake our righs are being systematically attacked. When I ask myself what the biggest problem we face is, the conclusion I come to is violence, the destruction it causes and some peoples willingness to initiate it to make the difference between right and wrong moot. Call me grandiose or naive but that's the way my mind works. Believe me when I say my life would have been easier had it not worked that way. It may be naive and I don't think we'll ever solve ALL our problems, but we've managed to come so far, despite all the stupidity. The human mind HAS solved virtually all our problems except for that fact that we keep killing each other. Education and constant questioning is, to my mind, the only solution. It's like a war of attrition on stupidity. Intelligent people do not have to solve their problems with violence imo. Call it what you will but imagine this - what if, hypothetically, overnight 95% of the worlds population were to consider the use of force abhorrent? What would our world become then? That's the endgame I'm talking about. Overpopulation will instantly become our biggest problem but I like to think we'll solve that one too. Grandiose? Perhaps. Far fetched? Absolutely considering our reality, but we have to move in one direction or another. As for myself I'd like to move in the direction of reason. That is why the video that started this thread hit me so hard. It shhok me in a way that few things ever have. I know this is just an example of what goes on all the time. I don't care that he's a football player, though many will. (He is going to play this Sunday, coincidentally after his team got destroyed) If people are capable of such savagery against their own children, in this day and age, then I don't see us winning the war of attrition I spoke of. Frankly as an atheist, (please everyone, let's not go there and say we did) I wouldn't give a ***nn since it may all fall down but it probably won't in my lifetime, but my son must live on this earth, so I have to. I don't know if this makes sense to anyone, but if we take the position that there's nothing we can do and that's just the way it is, then we'll continue down the spiral.

There is one thing this guy deserves. That is being put in prison in general population and having all there know and see what he has done to a child, his child. None of this isolation for his protection. What protection did his child have? I doubt he will serve his time, he may become injured and fall down and hurt himself A LOT. As big as he is those guys in prison have no fear and they don't like child beaters because many have come from that same situation. Send him to prison and let him harvest what he has sown. Just please don't put him in isolation for his protection.

Couple things. First that does not align well with your stated goals. You seem to think violence allowed is fitting.
Second of all it is child molesters they despise not as much child abusers. Just sayin.

Whatever your views on corporal punishment, and however you choose to "correct" (better than punish) a child, here is the first rule that needs to always be followed: never correct a child while angry. Anger always disrupts good judgement.

It's far from a given that he'll face any legal consequences at all as the law in Texas is very vaque. If it went to a trial of his Texas peers it's very possible that he'll be acquitted, given the culture. (No disrespect to any Texans that might possibly read this.)
An internet search on the law in Texas lead to a few interesting articles one of which was this - http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nfl......5696169/ The line that stood out to me was - "I have always believed that the way my parents disciplined me has a great deal to do with the success I have enjoyed as a man," So it seems that in this family it has gone on for at least two generations. Another thing that I found amazing was that corpoal punishment is an option for school teachers and administrators. Parents have to sign a form saying that they do not want their child disciplined in that manner. In 2014, you'd think that it would be a given but apparently not.

Notice it says public schools. Only two states ban corporal punishment in private schools. So, you better still be nice to the Nun at your Catholic school or she may use the ruler on you!

I found it interesting how many countries have outlawed any form of corporal punishment, even by parents in the home:
http://www.cnn.com/2011/WORLD/asiapcf/11......ishment/ "Sweden, in 1979, was the first to make it illegal to strike a child as a form of discipline. Since then, many other countries in Europe have also instituted bans, as have New Zealand and some countries in Africa and the Americas." So, you see NYCTwister, in other parts of the world, those who might read your post about the use of corporal punishment on your children might find you quite barbaric! |

"Sweden, in 1979, was the first to make it illegal to strike a child as a form of discipline." Sweden, did they have any children to strike in 1979?
Jan Guillou brought up eugenics in the TV-program Rekordmagazinet in the 1980s, at which time this was still a topic largely unknown to the people, but it wasn't until 1997, following the publication of articles by Maciej Zaremba in the Dagens Nyheter daily, widespread attention was given to the fact that Sweden once operated a strong sterilization program, which was active primarily from the mid-1930s until the 1970s. A governmental commission was set up, and finished its inquiry in 2000.[citation needed] The eugenistic legislation was enacted in 1934 and was formally abolished in 1976. According to the 2000 governmental report, 21,000 were estimated to have been forcibly sterilized, 6,000 were coerced into a 'voluntary' sterilization while the nature of a further 4,000 cases could not be determined.[35] However, the 40,000 or so socio-medical cases are contested, and Zaremba and others argue that they were more in the interest of society than individual women. The Swedish state subsequently paid out damages to victims who contacted the authorities and asked for compensation. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compulsory_sterilization
If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.
