Are there magicians who only do card tricks? Are they successful?

Yes. and Yes.
Darwin Ortiz is a good place to start. |

The reason I ask is because I have always thought that if one presents only one type of magic, people will get bored. That's why I try to maximize the amount of variety in my shows.
So Darwin Ortiz can present say 45 minutes of card magic and leave the audience wanting more? |

He might leave magicians wanting more.

Are you saying that Darwin can't entertain a law audience with cards for 45 minutes and leave them wanting more, Kabbalah?

Jon Armstrong, he does a rubberband trick in his set, adds a plunger here and there (with cards), but he does pretty much exclusively card tricks. And yeah, he seems to be pretty darn successful. I saw him lecture at Magic-Con this year, his stuff is stuff everyone does, just well handled, well routined, he just is himself but more himself on stage.
I saw Darwin Ortiz as well, performing and then explaining. I mean he writes a great book but isn't the most entertaining to watch, with all due respect. |

Well, of course, whether or not he bores you has little bearing on whether or not he can entertain a lay audience and leave them wanting more. And of course, I'm always amazed how quickly card magicians, in particular, will throw each under the bus.
But back to the original post: 1. Ortiz has a successful career. 2. Ortiz does nothing but cards. |

I just attended a Darwin Ortiz lecture. He was entertaining and informative as well. He specifically made the comment, in answer to a question, that the best thing he ever did was to ignore the advice of other magicians who told him no one could entertain with card magic alone and succeed.

Does Darwin even perform for lay audiences?

According to his web site: http://darwinortiz.com/entertainer/
He does receptions, banquets, formal closeup shows, hospitality suites, and he does a crooked gambling show. so...yeah. He performs for layman. |

Lennart Green does almost nothing besides card tricks. I think you could say the same of Harry Lorayne.

The one thing that bothers me about magic in general is the maintenance of props.
If one does just card magic with one regular deck, one doesn't have this problem. If one's deck wears out, you just have to buy a new one. |

"As a sleight-of-hand entertainer, Darwin Ortiz is constantly in demand to appear at corporate and private functions. His clients include IBM, Nextel, Bear Stearns, Purolator Courier, Aetna Insurance, Price-Waterhouse, the Pentagon, the senior management of the McDonald’s Corp., Eton College in Windsor, England and both the Barack Obama and George W. Bush Presidential Inaugural Banquets.
His venues for corporate clients include conventions, banquets, hospitality suites, and management retreats." I guess someone isn't bored. |

Richard Turner I think would be on the list too, but maybe he's retired by now.

I stand corrected...but I find his performance boring.
I worked the first Ronald Reagan inauguration in 1981 and I found myself boring! But, that was over 30 years ago.

Don't forget Paul Gordon... one of the best to entertain with a deck of cards.
